home made soups

Are home made soups high in nutritional content…especially for growing kids?

soups are hydrating and a healthier choice for a meal compared to other items (pizza, hamburgers, fried foods, etc).

They contain protein (chicken, beef) and veggies.....and if they're not overcooked, then the ingredients should retain much of their nutritional content.

They're also comforting and hearty. And for kids who normally don't enjoy veggies, soups are a way for them to get their veggies. You could even a bit of pasta in the soup to make it more fun for kids to eat.

And many soups go good with a side of bread. For example, for lunch you can give your kids a thermos of tomato soup (tomatoes are very good for you) and a grilled cheese sandwich.

definitely healthier than the canned/packaged variety which are high in sodium and salt content.

Re: home made soups

Kids usually enjoy chicken noodle soup and tomato soup. I've seen students of various ages bring soup for lunch.

Cream of roasted red pepper soup is like tomato soup
If your children like Chinese food, you can even give them chicken corn soup or hot and sour soup.......or vegetable soup with chinese seasoning to it.

There is also daal soup, which I've heard is good, but I've never tired it.

*** Check the sodium content if you buy commercial soup. And be careful with some "vegetarian" soups because their broth is not halal. For example...."French Onion soup".....sounds halal but it's typically made from beef broth. So, check the ingredients before buying.

As mentioned above, I think that homemade soups are a healthier choice than the commercial variety. Because YOU get to control what goes into it and how much of what goes into it. :)

Re: home made soups

You can make a nutritious soup from steamed brocolli or cauliflower or boiled betts that your kids will love. Just blend brocolli or cauliflower after steamings and give a tadka of your choice. I like mohri tadka. Add beef or chicke broth. Add salt to taste. Throw in a few cashews for texture and you got a yummy soup that is thick and tasty.
