Home made cookbook?

I have no idea where thsi should go but here goes,
Im thinking of making a little book of recipes/cooking tips etc. just as a small gift to my friend (well to whomever will get hitched first :hehe: ) Good idea or no? how would I go abt doing it? Anyone done something like this?

Re: Home made cookbook?

I did this years ago for my mom and to this day its one of her prized posessions. It was a little different than a book though...I got index cards, alphabetic tabs and a box just the right size for the index cards. I used pretty contact paper (its like tape or wallpaper) and added felt flowers and butterflies all colors to match her kitchen. Then I wrote in my neatest handwriting all of her favorite recipes and any other recipes that I thought she'd like. I've added to it over the years, so has she and other family members.

A lovely idea for sure.

^ That is such a nice idea! :)

Very good idea. You could make a recipe book out of a photo album, you know the type with the self adhesive film over the whole page? Put a photo of the finished dish in it and another paper with the written recipe under it too. M3's idea also v good.

One needs time and patience for this...

I'm so glad you asked this question! One of my favorite websites that I can't stop raving about is called blurb.com. It is a really inexpensive way to make any type of professional looking, but personalized book, i.e. a travelogue or in your case a cookbook.

You are totally responsbile for designing and providing the layout for the book - the website provides downloadable software that is easy to use and where you can easily upload any pictures you want to include in the book. You can get glossy paper, hardcover, softcover whatever strikes your fancy.

As for specific suggestions, I think it would be great idea to take pictures of the steps of food preparation in addition to the finished recipe - this really helps novices as they get a visual representation of what you describe in the steps. Also, since you're giving it to personal friends - you can include pics of yourself with these friends and comment on shared experiences.

I think the best thing about this website, especially if you want to give this as a gift to several people is that you can order multiple copies without having to duplicate your work.

Take a look at the website - go the bookstore section link and look at cookbooks under "all categories" - the books you see are made by people like you and me.
