yeah, she has two workshops- one in karachi, one in lahore. you send her the design you want and the fabric that you want, and she takes over from there and has her people make it. when its done, she parcels it to you. i wrote her a three page design document because i’m pretty anal about some things and i outlined specifically the kind of work i wanted (beading, threadwork, diamantes, no zari or other stuff like that), and the colours i wanted based off a swatch that i had, etc. i can send it to you to check out, if you want. when she saw it, she was like, this thing is so freakin’ detailed, even a blind person could make this outfit! hahahaha
having said that, i had no idea about patterns but i wanted something similar to the picture i had sent, which she did. for my mehendi outfit, the pic wasn’t a close up so i had no idea what kaam was on it, but her people are so skilled and she herself has such great taste that when i did see it, i was blown away. i would never have thought of the kind of kaam she did and it looked gorgeous. so its pretty safe to trust her with these things.
the best way to make sure she, or anyone else for that matter, gets the right colours is to send swatches… for instance red from a pic might look different to you and different to me and different to her. if, on the other hand, you sent her a swatch of the red you want, its super easy for her to get the fabric dyed the exact same shade. essentially, i find in this process that the more detailed you are and the more groundwork you do, the less possibility there is of being surprised by the finished product- and not in a good way. in my case, the outfit turned out even more beautiful than i had envisioned in my head, which was a great feeling, but it was also completely recognisable as the outfit i had wanted-- if that makes sense?
she recently hired two of karma’s kaarigar and i think that speaks a lot about her quality. she is based out of defence so if you have any family, they can go meet her in person. my parents went and met her to check on my mehendi and wedding dresses so i know she’s a nice person too.
the only issue i had was timing- i got my outfit a month before my wedding which was a bit later than i would have liked. to solve this issue, i would tell her your wedding date is a month before it actually is.

I went through the whole process of getting the cloth, sometimes getting it dyed, choosing the kaam and then the tailors…its sucha big hassle…people always back out on their promises…the kaam walas…the tailors…
Gulf has some amazing shops for kaam. I got almost all my outfits done there…I had 2 months to get it all done…and I somehow managed…the cost per suit i would say was 6000-8000 rps…that included the fabric, kaam and tailoring …but mind you, everything has gotten really expensive since this past December with oil prices rising further up n up…
Paposh doesnt have much…I wouldnt advice u to waste your time there…Kartaba on the contrary has some nice shops for kaam…and they are quite cheap too..
One thing about Gulf is that the kaam walas there have copied every single design off the magazines and they can make anything if you show them a picture…they even make bridal wear and copy the designer bridal outfits…You can get all sorts of fabrics from Gulf…so usually what I did was, I had a design in mind…I would go buy the fabric and give it for kaam right away…then they take about 10- 15 days for the kaam to be done…pick it up and get it to the tailors…the tailor would take about another 2 weeks considering December is a really busy season…
Kaam walas at gulf are considered a tid bit expensive compared to Kartaba and Paposh but that’s where I liked everything the most…
Now, If it was all worth it…I wouldnt say so…cuz somtimes the kaam walas would do something else instead of what you would have told them…so It was really frustrating at times…
I know someone in Defence, her name is Shani Abid…she designed a few of my outfits and she was pretty good…pretty reasonable too since she charged me 9000-10000 a suit which is totally worth it cuz it saved me time and effort and i had gorgeous outfits at the end of it all…PM me for details…
what’s sad is that some of my outfits from shadi are still sitting in the suitcases waiting to be worn…
