"Holiday Gifts" at the Workplace

So…how many of you do it?
Who do you get gifts for?
Who gives to you?
What do you give/receive?

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

used to do secret santa at my old job every year…

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

Our group picks a charity each year and we just donate to them instead of buying gifts for each other. It’s completely optional however.
My manager brings in stuff like a jar of homemade jam or cupcakes for everyone.

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

At my last workplace I got gifts for a couple of my colleagues (those whom I was close too),and it was only because they were always treating me out to lunch or ice cream, and didn’t allow me to pay because I was younger than them, so I got them gifts of appreciation during their holiday season. I gave them Yankee candles and a box of Sees chocolates thats all. Our workplace gave all of employees gift cards to Starbucks ($10).

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

I give gifts to teachers and husband give to colleagues but we write happy holidays on a card. Last year I gave these decorative plates which said season’s greetings and this year I am thinking of giving big coffee mugs which says happy holidays.

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

We do secret santa at work :chai: thats about it

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

so nobody gets a “special” gift for their immediate supervisor?

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

“special”? :hoonh:

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

My husband does that.

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

common practice in our office too

special in terms of outside of whatever Secret Santa stuff that may be going on…

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

Muzna I guess it depends on your relationship with them, at my last workplace all of us disliked our immediate superivisor, and the one above her, so we had no interest in gifting them

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

Every place I’ve worked at liked to keep it formal, we didn’t even have secret santa stuff going on. No more than a box of chocolates that was left for everyone to dive into. Only one boss where I interned would take us out to lunch whenever we completed some important task on the specified deadline but not really for holiday festivities. I actually prefer this when it comes to workplace. A: I don’t like getting too personal with colleagues, B: it could open a whole new can of worms with regards to workplace politics, C: most people are tight for money during the holiday season so they shouldn’t feel pressured into buying something for colleagues on top of all the family and friends they have to take care of.

“Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

We gift cards or box of cookies or chocolate from SAMs club, Bjs or Costco. Or I buy stuff from bath and body works and make a gift bag out of that. I stopped buying personal gifts and opted for gifts cards so that no one gets a gift that they hate and have to regift it, sell it at a yard sale, or donate. I find that you can’t go wrong with gift cards. Even a $5 or $10 amount can be enjoyed at Starbucks or dunkin donuts.

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

On Eid I got a Samsung Galaxy S3.

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

^Wow! You have a really nice boss/colleague.

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

I work for a really awesome company too!

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

From what I know, gifts should go downwards…i.e., higher ups give gifts to subordinates as a way to show appreciation…no one should have to give a gift (or pitch in for a gift) to a higher up UNLESS an individual wants to do that…but it shouldn’t be expected from a group.

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

Hear, hear. Good point. With this statement HUM(A) shares shot up. Just might gift some of the recently spiked shares to colleagues.

This is def. the proper etiquette. Also no perfume , jewelry gifts, clothing items to female colleagues from male colleagues. when in doubt t food or plants are the best to give.

Re: “Holiday Gifts” at the Workplace

At my previous workplace I used to get small X-Mas gifts from a few clients and suppliers. At the new one this will be my first Christmas. So let’s see what happens.
