First of all people do it with the Niyaat of sawab. I think there is nothing wrong with it and it does not make it haraam.
Secondly the problem comes when someone start thinking it was a part of Deen. Now thats the real problem because addition to Deen is not allowed and it becomes haram.
Thirdly, there is a cultural aspect to it, which we cannot ignore. So as long as our concepts are clear, I feel its fine.
