I had a short argument with one of my friends over same topic some months ago. I was saying that there is no harm doing so i.e. holding Quran over Bride and Groom’s head. Or actually not only at wedding ocassions but when you are going on any long journey or going on some mission etc, this tradition is practiced by most of muslim families.
My point is that Islam is not a narrow minded religion and it does give place to those traditions n cultures which do not conflict or clash with the basic beliefs of Islam. This tradition in subject is one of such kind of traditions.
We hold Quran coz its the book of Allah, we are supposed to follow it. Its blessing for us Muslims. Its a written guide for us. Usually a small amount of money is kept on the Quran which is given to a needy as your Jaan and Maal sadqa. Sadqa is not forbidden, so what is wrong in doing so?
First, this tradition is not practiced by “most” of the families, only the ones who have not invested time to learn Islam. Sorry to be rude, but that is the truth. If you try to mimick the life of Prophet Muhammad:saw:, you have to search and verify the actions. You will not find any such action in his life. Secondly, saying the ayath(s) that ask for protection and prosperity will be more appropriate than holding the quran over the head of the newly weds.
Placing the money in the Quran is not going to double the Sawab of Sadaqqa, however, saving the Quran (hifz) in your heart will do wonders for your soul and life
FT, just as there is more blessing in reciting the Qur'an instead of wearing an ayat in form of a gold pendant around your neck, similarly while there may be no harm in holding up a Qur'an over the head, better is for the bride and groom to recite the Qur'an for protection.
Fine I do not disgree to what you guys said but again my point is if there is any HARM or HARAM in doing so? If there is no harm then doing it or avoiding it, should not make any difference?
Of course reading Quran is better, we recite it daily n not only on wedding or while going on a journey or mission, Okay keeping money on Quran may not double the sawaab but does it make your sawaab half or does it completely nullify your neeyat and push you into Sinner catagory ? Will you be questioned on day of judgement that why did you hold my book over ur daugther n son's head? Do you think He is going to mind this act? Asking these questions coz ofcourse my concern is Him.
Come on until I do not see any SIN in doing so, i am not going to pass judgement that its a wrong tradition or action. There are major sins like Shirik, if God forbid you are giving importance to anything over Allah. If you were doing sajda to Quran would be unforgivable sin. But thats not what we do and thats not what our neeyat is while practicing this particular tradition.
Just a short note: While we do this holding Quran over head thing, we still say Safar ki duaa while on journey and keep reciting diff duaas until we reach the desitnation safe n sound, we still recite Quran and say prayers and keep doing other obligations and pray for long happy n healthy matrimonial life thru out our lives, we still keep our belief and faith strong on Allah and His ways of making things easy for us while on any mission. So its not that once Quran was held over ur head once in life you are a completely blessed soul now.** its just a tradition.**

So is it mere about getting MORE blessings and LESS blesssings??? There is nothing wrong doing it right?
What, for example, I recite Quran on my wedding and then do this tradition in subject as well, will it make me double blessed?
What if i have a habit of reciting a particular ayat all the time in mouth and i have same ayat engraved on my pendant too, will it double the blessings on me?

So you mean to say that "Most" of the families have really invested time to learn islam?? Thats a good find out but if its true.
Ppl do say ayats always and not only at specific ocassions. And as i said newly weds do not stop saying ayats for protection and prosperity once wedded.

Secondly the problem comes when someone start thinking it was a part of Deen. Now thats the real problem because addition to Deen is not allowed and it becomes haram.
Thirdly, there is a cultural aspect to it, which we cannot ignore. So as long as our concepts are clear, I feel its fine.
the fact that hindus, sikhs or christians have similar pratices does not by itself invalidate the act. you have to investigate it in light of our own law. although i doubt that we find this in the example of the prophet (s), the act itself does not transgress any established islamic law. if there is no benefit from it, there is no harm in it either.

Having a niyah for sawab will not earn you sawab. I could sit at home with the niyah for sawab and then it should rain down on me, if that were the case.
It is the cultural aspect of it which causes the most because over time people get so fixated on the practice that they almost start believing there is a significance in the deen for that practice.
what is the purpose of Quran. read it understand it and ACT upon its orders. holding it on head or passing under it will not give u any blessing. bcz that is not the purpose of this book.
innovations are haram in Islam. if u think u are doing a swab ka kaam by passing under quran its a shirk and innovation. protection and blessing is from Allah alone.
