Hold your breath

For how long can you hold your breath?
What counts as holding breath? Not exhaling or not inhaling?

Re: Hold your breath

My record is about 5 minutes holding breath under water, but you have to keep exhaling slowly and intermittently and many avid swimmers can do this easily, I think total interruption of breathing will be maximum 50 seconds to one minute for me also underwater. Never tried holding breath on ground.

Re: Hold your breath

5 minutes!!
Do you think the duration will be different on the ground?
I never timed myself while holding breath underwater, but I felt it’s easier to let go and hold breath under water as compared to on ground. Maybe due to the intermittent exhaling underwater. Though I doubt I ever went beyond 1.5 minutes :bummer:

Re: Hold your breath

I think you are right, I think underwater you can hold breath for much longer. I believe your body is more likely to use the residual air capacity in your lungs when you are submerged than when you are on the ground.

Which one is your favourite swimming stroke?

Re: Hold your breath

1:32 on ground without exhaling. I would have felt like:cool: if I hadn’t read your 5 minutes @NavAhmed :hehe:

Re: Hold your breath

you must be a good swimmer

Re: Hold your breath

I can’t swim. I used to compete with my siblings on holding breath underwater. I’d hold dad’s hand and float. It was usually in the seawater and not a pool so I had to hold someone’s hand.
I always won too

Re: Hold your breath

you are always a winner

Re: Hold your breath

:hehe: nah… I think it has something to do with the fact that my pulse rate has always been towards the low, 55bpm on an average. Maybe my body uses comparatively less oxygen:hmmm:

Re: Hold your breath

Slow metabolism or good level of physical fitness? I am a runner and swimmer but my heart rate never drops below 70. I think it may be that I have a high metabolic rate or could be due overuse of caffeine. I cannot reference my pulse as a sign of my fitness unlike many other athletes.

Re: Hold your breath

I’m not an athlete and I barely exercise.
How to find out if my metabolism is slow or not ?
I don’t use caffeine at all.

Re: Hold your breath

There are several different methods but none is 100% accurate as ur basal metabolic rate depends upon your eating, activity levels, temp, age and gender. Several hand held devices can measure your oxygen input and C02 output to give an estimate of ur energy expenditure.

If u really want an equation, than here it is 655 + {4.35 weight in pounds} + {4.7 x height in inches} - {4.7 x age in years) (women)
there is different equation for men
