AMSTERDAM, JUNE 27. It was virtually a goal-rush as formidable Germany hammered a lacklustre Pakistan 6-0 in the opening match of the four-nation Rabobank hockey championship 2004 here on Saturday. Mathias Witthaus opened the account in the 11th minute with a brilliant reverse flick.

The second goal came from Bjoran Michel in the 25th minute and he scored again to take Germany into half time with a 3-0 lead.

In the second half, penalty-corner specialist Florian Kunz scored in the 50th and 56th minutes, and Christoph Bechmann completed the humiliation scoring with a powerful shot from the right, beating the entire Pakistan defence. — UNI

Pakistan toyed with a hapless Indian defence to inflict a humiliating 6-1 defeat on their arch-rivals in a crucial league match of the four-nation Rabobank hockey tournament on Tuesday.

The huge loss virtually killed India’s hopes of playing in the final of the tournament which also features Germany and Holland.

**The one-sided contest, which India needed to win to keep alive their hopes for a berth in the final, saw Pakistan scoring three goals in each halves.

This was India’s second loss in as many matches in the tournament following their 2-0 defeat against Holland on Sunday.**

In the match today, if Pakistan played a disciplined game, the Indians were culprit of a sloppy show. They often struggled for ball possession and hardly made any organised moves during the entire duration of the match. Their lone goal by Thakur also appeared to be a fluke.

The Indians rarely posed any threat to the opposition post with most of the forwards including veteran Dhanraj Pillay failing to match their counterparts in speed and ball control.

The Pakistanis, on the other hand, played purposefully with some incisive moves from both the flanks, creating a lot of problems for the Indian defenders.

While the Pakistanis enjoyed an upper hand executing some perfect passes and ball trappings, their counterprts suffered due to some unimaginative game plan. The Indians failed to make even a single coordinated move in the first half an hour of play.

The eight-time Olympic winners started the high-profile game with two of their most senior players — Dhanraj Pillay and Baljit Singh — but both failed to rise to the occasion that did no good to the side’s cause.

The goof-ups in the Indian deep defence helped Pakistan strike thrice to take complete control of the match in the first half itself even though India reduced the margin with an opportunistic goal in the 32nd minute through Thakur.

A mid-field error by Vikram Pillay as early as in the seventh minute was followed by a long run by Kashif Jawwad whose cross from the right flank was hit home by Shakeel Abbasi after Kanwalpreet made a mess with the clearance.

Pakistan had to wait till the 28th minute to extend their lead when Sohail Abbas slammed home from the only penalty corner that the side got in the first half.

Following a lacklustre first half display, India replaced Devesh Chauhan in goal with young Adrian D’Souza, but the move made no change to their fate as Pakistan scored three more goals to emerge victorious.

Sohail scored his second goal from another penalty corner in the 43rd minute and eight minutes later Jawwad made it 5-1 before Nadeem’s goal six minutes from the end sealed the fate of the Indians.

India now have only a very remote chance of qualifying for the final.

They play their last league match against Germany on Thursday.

Despite a superior display, World Champions Germany went down 1-3 to Olympic champions and hosts Holland in their second league match at the four-nation Rabobank hockey tournament here.

In the floodlit match last night, Germany did everything but scoring and that spelled doom for them. On the contrary, better finishing, despite mediocre performance, by the hosts earned them full three points to take them right on the top of the league table.

Holland opened their account in the seventh minute through Karel
Klaver when the veteran Dutch Teun de Nooijer broke through the German defence and set him up (1-0).

Germany had a chance to equalise through a penalty corner but their specialist drag-flicker and skipper Florian Kunz let them down.

Ronald Brouwer made it 2-0 for the hosts when his shot, off a rebound, beat the German goalkeeper to increase the lead in the 25th minute.

A minute from the break, Taeke Taekema made it 3-0 from Holland's only penalty corner chance in the first half and the scoreboard read the same in the breather.

The Germans finally reduced the margin in the second half but was again let down by their skipper as Kunz missed a penalty shot that could have boosted their morale and brought them back in the game.

Germany's only goal came through Christopher Zeller whose cracking shot from the right top of the circle beat Dutch goalkeeper Guus Vogels (3-1).

Netherlands 3-2 Pakistan

Paksitan just lost an entertaining game of hockey. Pakistan were trailing dutch by 2-0. Came back brilliantly to equalize. They had to win to have any chance to make it to the final. Right at the end Dutch scored another one to clinch it for Holland. They lost the match right at the end by giving a goal or two away. Its been a norm for pakistan. Oltmans needs to address this issue urgently. Olympics are just round the corner and its preperations are somewhat dodgy so far.

Germany trounce India 4-0

Germany's Bjorn Michel scored a hat-trick as India crashed to their third successive defeat in the four-nation Rabobank hockey tournament here today.

Michel's goals in a 10-minute blitzkreig helped his side emerge 4-0 winners and win a place in the final against Holland on Sunday.

India would now play for the 3-4 places against arch-rivals Pakistan, who would take on Holland in the final league match later today. Even a win may not help Pakistan since they lost the league match against Germany.

After managing to put up a fight in the first half, during which they conceded a goal scored by Christopher Bechmann, the Indians hardly offered any resistance after the break as Michel went berserk converting three penalty corners.

This was India's third defeat in a row following their 0-2 defeat to Holland and 1-6 humiliation by Pakistan.

India rested veteran strikers Dhanraj Pillay and Baljit Singh Dhillon, who both failed to impress in the first two games. But the move failed to yield any positives as rookies Hari Prasad, Inderjit Singh and Sunil Yadav failed to trouble the German defenders.

Even their famed forwards -- Gagan Ajit Singh and Prabhjot Singh -- failed to do anything noteworthy to stem the rot.

India, who played some organised hockey in the first half, came close to open their account as early as in the seventh minute but Gagan missed a sitter much to the disgust of his teammates.

Gagan Ajit Singh took a long time to take aim at the German post after getting a perfect cross from captain Dilip Tirkey from inside the Indian half.

In the absence of Pillay and Dhillon, coach Rajinder Singh made full use of the rolling substituions in the first half in a desperate attempt to score a goal.

Even though the Indians were pressing hard for a goal, it was Germany who took the lead in the 14th minute when a good move through the right flank ended with a searing hit by Bechmann that beat goalkeeper Devesh Chauhan all ends up.

India were lucky not to concede anymore goals before the end of the first half despite Germany getting three penalty corners including one a few seconds before the half-time hooter.

Captain Florian Kunz hit wide twice while the third was smartly palmed away by Chauhan.

The second half saw a dramatic change in the script as the Germans increased their pace, making several forays into the Indian circle testing the defence.

India managed to thwart the rival forwards till nine minutes into the half but three penalty corners in quick succession completely changed the complexion of the game.

First Michel scored with an impressive variation employed by the Germans in the 44th minute and followed it up with two powerfully hit drag-flicks in the 52nd and 54th minute to tilt the scale in favour of the Europeans.

The triple strike made India, who had made some good moves early on, struggle for ball possession and they gave away positional advantage to their opponents every now and then.

Pakistan have beatan India 5-3 to clinch the third position. Pakistan lead india 2-1 at the half time but India bounced back to lead 3-2 in the first fifteen minutes of second half but Sohail abbad and Rehan butt scored three goals b/w them to ensure a pakistan victory.

Pakistan has not beatan Holland or Germany in this european tourney so far, in three tournaments. They need to show more steel against these two If they want to win Olympic medal.

Nevertheless a good performance against arch rivals.

beat india not once but TWICE that is indeed a tonic :jhanda: ]

German won robobank tournmanet by beating Holland 5-4. It was an amazing match with Germany getting the winner 5 minutes before the final whistle. These two are rightly seeded 1 and 2 for olympic.

Pakistan needs to do a lot of work to beat any of these in olympic otherwise i dont see gold and silver goign anwywhere else apart from these two.

Can anyone tell me Pakistan's seeding in olympic hockey?

what on earth is rabobank???
sounds pretty queer :-\

Germany won... I m surprised. I thought keh Nederlands gonna win it. They were playing well in the first half
