Shakeel replaces Sameer

LAHORE, Sept 12: **Right-winger Shakeel Abbasi has been included in the Pakistan hockey team in place of unfit Sameer Hussain who has been sidelined due to groin injury. **

Pakistan are scheduled to play this month’s Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur.

The Dutch physiotherapist Derek Verder, who joined the national training camp at the National Hockey Stadium on Thursday, advised Sameer two-week rest.

The team management decided to include Shakeel who toured Australia for two back-to-back four national tournaments in June, but was dropped from Champions Trophy squad.

Sameer had staged comeback into the squad after he was axed from last year’s World Cup squad. Sameer has been plagued by the same injury for nearly two years.

He also faced groin problem during the last month’s Champions Trophy in Amstelveen and was hardly utilised by the team management at the tournament.

Not sure how good this Abbasi fella is but missing Sameer from the team could be a lil bit worry for Abdul Rasheed Jr. and Tahir Zaman. I hope Shakeel Abbasi is as good find as Rehan Butt. Both are Right-Wings of Pakistan Hockey team!

Pakistan confident of regaining Asia Cup

Pakistan hockey captain Mohammad Nadeem has asserted that his team will regain the Asia Cup.

‘‘We have won this cup thrice in a row and now I think we have got the team that is capable of regaining it,’’ Nadeem said ahead of the sixth edition of the Cup, which starts in Kuala Lumpur on September 21.

The winner will qualify for the 2006 World Cup to be held in Germany.

The Pakistan captain agreed that India is a formidable side and said they [India] will their missing-penalty corner striker, Jugraj Singh.

‘‘India has many talented players in their ranks. Jugraj is their penalty-corner specialist but as a field player he is not threatening,’’ he added.

He admitted that it was the weak defence and a tentative forwardline, which was a problem for the Pakistan team in the Champions Trophy.

‘‘We have improved on these grey areas. The forward line is also the first defence of a team and if it clicks well that means half the battle is won,’’ Nadeem said.

He said prior to coming to Kuala Lumpur the Pakistan Hockey Federation had sought the advice of FIH’s master coach Tayyab Ikram.

‘‘He [Ikram] gave us tips and discussed the strategy for the Asia Cup after watching shortcomings of the team in the Champions Trophy,’’ he said, adding that team coach Tahir Zaman has worked hard to prepare the team for this crucial event.

The skipper expressed confidence that his defenders will put up good show and there will be good coordination between the forwards, half-line and defence.

He said, **''It is time we start winning. A win here will end the drought [of winning the titles]," but added that competition is going to be very tough.

"India, South Korea and Malaysia are tough rivals and it will be foolish to take any of them lightly.‘’ **

He had a word of praise for his penality-corner expert, Sohail Abbas, saying: ‘‘Sohail is a lethal weapon. He has improved his game while playing in the German league this year.’’

Nadeem said defending champions South Korea are in the process of rebuilding their side, while Malaysia always performs better in front of a home crowd. He disclosed he will retire from international hockey after the Athens Olympics next year.

‘‘I have played international hockey for a good number of years and I think I will not be able to play international hockey after a year,’’ he added.

I haven’t read any news of Pakistan squad for Asia Cup? Does anyone know what it is?

Urghhhh…my head hurts this morning :bummer:

Pakistan, Korea favourites as Asia Cup begins today

KUALA LUMPUR: The 6th Asia Cup gets underway in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday (today) with the eight competing countries looking to secure an automatic place in the 2006 World Cup to be held in Germany.

With the champions guaranteed a spot in Germany, defending champions South Korea are expected to put on a good show in Group A that also includes Malaysia, Japan and Hong Kong. Group B comprises traditional foes Pakistan and India as well as China and Bangladesh.

The Koreans are odds-on favourites to bag their third consecutive title after winning the last two in 1994 and 1999, but they are expected to see stiff competition from Pakistan, the winning team in 1982, 1985 and 1989.

India, Malaysia and Japan are also tipped to perform well at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil. Despite the long-term dominance of Asian hockey by Pakistan, India, South Korea and Malaysia, Japan have also emerged as a force to be reckoned with of late.

The Japanese have undergone intense preparations for the tournament and their five-match series against South Korea proved that they are on the right track. Though Japan lost two and drew three matches, scoring 14 goals and conceding 17 during the competition, their coach Toichi Nagai believes his team has what it takes to make the last four in Kuala Lumpur.

“Our target is to make the semis and looking at how the team has performed we are capable of achieving it,” he said. “The Koreans will be difficult to displace but we are optimistic that we can get the better of the Malaysians this time around.”

The Malaysian team has been in turmoil following allegations of misconduct by the junior team that played in Poland last month.

Meanwhile, Indian coach Rajinder Singh could be out of the job if his team does not win the Asia Cup following his scathing attacks on his players. Singh, who has barred his players from talking to the press, has said that some of his team had been distracted from the game by personal sponsorship and endorsement deals.

There was somewhat of an uneasy truce within the Indian team when it flew into Kuala Lumpur on Thursday. Singh’s predecessor, Cedric de Souza, lost his job in the midst of the World Cup last year.

The Pakistanis are expected to capitalise on the discontent within the Indian camp when the two teams meet next Wednesday. “We are as ready as we can be for the tournament and look forward to winning our fourth title in the series,” Pakistan manager Abdul Rashid Junior said. “Our clashes with India have always been epic encounters and I feel it will be no different this time around.”

Ace penalty corner marksman Sohail Abbas is in fine form, evident from his three goals in the friendly against Malaysia on Friday. :hula:

Pakistan inflict merciless 8-0 defeat on BD in Asia Cup opener](http://www.jang.com.pk/thenews/)

KUALA LUMPUR: Pakistan were merciless in their opening match at the Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur Sunday, handing Bangladesh a 8-0 mauling at the National Hockey Stadium. Nonetheless the Pakistanis put up a rather poor performance and were thwarted time and again by in-form Bangladesh goalkeeper Rasel Khan.

The much-vaunted penalty corner battery of the Pakistanis also failed to strike as efficiently as it normally does and was only able to convert two of the five penalty corners the side was awarded. Mudassar Ali opened scoring in the eighth minute and the Pakistanis failed to immediately convert their domination into goals.

Khasif Jawad later notched up a hat-trick, scoring in the 21st, 46th and 61st minutes, while penalty corner ace marksman Sohail Abbas got a brace by converting penalty corners in the 26th and 62nd. Skipper Nadeem Ahmad came onto the score sheet in the 46th minute while Rehan Butt rounded up a miserable opening match for the Bangladeshis with the eighth and final goal in the 64th minute.

“We played well in patches but I am not too worried about it as it was our first match,” said Pakistan team manager Abdul Rashid Junior. “There will be a tough match against China tomorrow and the players know what the stakes are.”

In another match, Japan overcame stiff resistance from Hong Kong to register a 7-2 win. But it was more of a warm-up for the Japanese who were conserving energy for their vital match against Malaysia Monday. “We tried out a couple of things in the first half and they did not work well. But we did not want to give too much away as the Malaysians were observing our match closely,” said Japan coach Toichi Nagai.

Japan took the lead through Akihiko Hirate in the 12th minute but allowed Hong Kong to get back into the game with Preetpal Singh Chima scoring via a reverse hit in the 20th minute. It was a totally different Japan in the second half as they ran rings around the fast-tiring Hong Kong players.

And their efforts were rewarded when skipper Kenichi Katayama scored in the 40th minute to put them 2-1 ahead.

Naohiko Tobita made it 3-1 when he converted a penalty corner in the 50th but Hong Kong stayed in the hunt when Ali Akhbar scored in the 51st minute. Japan scored four goals in 11 minutes through Katayama (56), Ryuji Furusato (61, 68) and Kazayuki Ozwaw (64) to take control of the match. Hong Kong scored a consolation goal through Arif Ali who converted a penalty stroke in the 69th minute.

Rahnay doo bhai, I figured it out by myself... Chalaak hoon mein ;) Anyway, ** result of Malaysia vs Korea match held in a draw 1-1.** Good job by the Malaysians. They just pulled off their toughest game!

Pakistan had a good day but our Manager seems disappointed because when Pakistan had quick chance of scoring the goals, we couldn't be able to do it. 2 goals came out of 5 Penalty corners, which is a worry.

Anyway Congrats to Kashif Jawad for his first ever hat-trick! :)
