You hear of that one crazy man/woman who is called a Hoarder. Their home looks like a scrap yard with stacks of stuff that has no business belonging there in the first place. Those are the extreme cases, we always hear of. The picture I always get is the notorious animated character from The Simpsons which is that crazy lady with a bunch of cats.
But we know hoarding exists on smaller scale too. Don’t we hoard stuff too without really realizing it? You save one thing here, one thing there. Moving it around the house, to eventually end up in a closet somewhere. You think you’ll need it. But fact and the little voice in the back of your head tells you, it’s a useless practice. This particular thing or things, will never see the daylight again.
So why do we do it? Do you do it? How do you counter the urge to hoard things?
I always thought hoarding was associated with loading up on stuff ahead of major scarcity - caused by natural disaster, famine, poor crop season etc. Mainly associated with excess greed and no concern for others.
I’ve heard that it can be a problem. I have a friend who’s probably a digital hoarder . He has gigs and gigs of movies and TV shows that he’ll never watch.
Have you guys ever watched a Hoarders marathon?? No matter how hard you try, you can't take your eyes off the screen. One time they found TWO cat carcusses in the pile of crap in one woman's house. AAAAA!!
Omg, in the 10 years or so that I've been a Realtor, I have seen
my fair share of hoarders! It still boggles my mind that people actually live like that, but yes, what you see on that TV show is real. I think hoarding to that degree is an addiction like anything else.
I hoarded alot of things when I was in university. Never got around discarding anything.
Now I am cleaning my house inside out. I took out all the extra clothes, extra shoes, stuff from under the beds, I emptied many drawers and cabinets, discarded many videos and cd's, chargers, wires, papers and whatnot.
I like the old school way of living, when they had clean, empty, and spacious houses, and only had things that they needed. And they bought fresh vegetables and fruits every other day. not the whole week worth of groceries.
