I have been to dozens of funerals, so I can tell you how it is done.
Pat the person lightly on the back and say something like "I am so sorry for your loss, just too early" If you knew the departed, then say "Just never thought will lose him/her so soon, wonderful person" (That last part about wonderful person may not even be true.

Express your sorrow to those left behind, that is always appreciated. If you know them well enough, share your special memories of the loved one that pased on, thats always helpful to those suffering great loss. Bring a casserole that they can either freeze or use right away. Those things make the most special friend that a person could wish for.
