This afternoon I noticed red bumps on my toddler’s thighs, and there hadn’t been anything there earlier that day. By this evening they have spread all over her legs, and are also a bit on her arms, and a couple on her face.
From what I’ve looked up, they look like hives and she seems to find them itchy (and boy is she frustrated by that!). But there doesn’t seem to be any breathing issue or any other swelling or anything else commonly associated with an allergic reaction. We’ve given her a warm bath and put her to bed in loose clothes, and thankfully she slept okay. We’ve alerted the doctor who told us what to give her if she’s disturbed in her sleep and has asked us to bring her in if it’s still there, but I would love some advice from you experienced parents out there about possible triggers, ways to keep her comfortable, and how to treat the rash.
A few details:
We stayed last night at the inlaws’ place. They’ve been out of town for a month, so the house has been empty, but it’s feels blasphemous to suggest the presence of dust or bugs in MIL’s house.
MIL/PIL did take her outside for a bit.
We were giving her some raisins and dried cranberries from a bowl that also had almonds and pistachios in it. Though hubby and I haven’t given her nuts, Ammi and MIL have slipped her some, and there hasn’t been any issue, so I don’t know about a nut allergy.
She ate some crackers that were yummy that MIL and PIL brought back from India.
I remember this happened to one of my nieces and it seemed as if she had reacted to the dye in a brand new outfit that had been gifted to her. Her skin just broke out in red rashes all over her back, stomach and everywhere the fabric was touching her skin.
We changed her, bathed her and put some Eucerin on her. She was fine after that.
It could be something new she might have come in contact with.
It's not chickenpox. That typically starts on the stomach and then you see the rash behind the ears. It could be an allergic reaction or. Viral. Give her benadryl and look out if swollen joints and/or fever. Apply ice pack on the itch. My kids hav had similar rashes an it was a viral both times, and once it was accompanied by low grade fever.
yes it's most common with children of less than 2 years of age.
With my daughter it was just fever for one day and then rashes all over her body. It's quite different with every kid because the link I have mentioned it is said that fever may also last for a week but in guriya's case it was just for 1 day
My neice had this last weekend...wierd red spots all over her legs...none on her stomach...or face..some on her arms....and it itched her a lot..took her docs and they said its a viral infection known as foot and mouth....but its not the one u get from eating meat!! its a different infection and goes away itself...we gave her some piriton and by the next day they all disappeard....hope ur toddler gets well soon x
This morning, she didn't look any better. In fact, it had spread a bit further. She was a bit restless and had trouble settling around 4am, and I cradled and rubbed her skin for a while to soothe her back to sleep.
In the morning we took her to the doctor who said it definitely looks like an allergic reaction to something. But to what? I did forget to mention that she just finished a course of amoxicillin on Saturday (and this rash appeared Sunday). She has taken it before without any side effects (except some diarrhea), and the doctor thinks it is possible she is allergic to it. He also said the nuts are a possibility. Once this clears up, he said we could try a small amount of nuts again, to see if she reacts. The amoxicillin allergy will complicate her treatments in the future, so I hope it isn't that. But nut allergies are definitely not good either.
aww poor baby...hope she feels better soon...iA.
Sometimes allergic reaction to a medicine or food item might not appear on the first exposure.Subsequent exposures trigger the allergic reaction.Maybe that is the case.Allergy to anything is no fun,but I hope you guys are able to figure out what actually triggers it so it can be avoided in the future.
^ Hm. Nope, but she has had a bit before and did not react. But it's good to know! I will keep an eye out (as Bunny's cousin does seem to have some sensitivity to tomatoes).
^^Aww..I know.IA she'll be fine soon.My daughter has some seasonal allergies and on days like today when the temps are high and it is sunny, her face becomes all red and itchy...and there is actually nothing much I can do except for applying some ointment.
Allergies suck..!!
