Ok, so I got the idea for this thread from the thread about apologizing to Bangladesh. This is a pretty serious thing, I’ve seen a lot of people (adults even) believing that the War of 65 went great for Pakistan or it was good for us. Both are wrong: we didn’t win, we just didn’t lose and it was disastrous for Pakistan’s economy.
Same with 1971.
Recently, I was looking over my cousin’s O-levels history book and I was amazed at the section about Musharraf. Reading that, you would think Musharraf was some kind of a god-send for Pakistan.
Also, childern are taught that it was Zia who saved Pakistan, we would be under Russian control right now. This, in itself is highly debatable but that is another issue. History books don’t tell that it is Zia who is actually responsible for the current “War on Terror” that has destroyed both Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Theres a real distortion of History both sides of the Border.
From what I gather the three Wars over Pakistan in Kashmir gt progressively worse. In 1947-48 it was a close fought draw. 1965 was a tactical victory for Pakistan but a political defeat. 1971 was practically a civil war.
Zia was a sell out like Mush. Your right about Zia being one of the main causes for the Terrorist problem.
This happens when studying is basically rote memorization of "facts". The element of tolerant debate has pretty much left Pakistani civic society, when we have more democracy aka free media and a defiant judiciary to boot.
I have a question - a few years ago I read a report (from somebody in Pakistan, but later quoted by others) that mentioned things like (not exact words) Hindus are devils, that Indians want only Hindus etc...I also read that the Pak government was going to correct these propoganda, Can anyone from Pak confirm if these have been done?
First questions first. Those of you who have responded to this thread. How many of you have actually taken a Pakistan Studies course in Pakistan for more than year. After that is settled we will see what questions can be address.
Faris need not reply. His knowledge of history scares me..... :p
^ me…others might have studied the ‘O’ Level history which would be different…i studied ‘social studies’ and ‘pakistan studies’ in paindu/urdu medium govt boooks
Ah I remember social studies from 3rd to 4th grade. Got shipped out after that. But yes Pakistan Studies was a unique experience. "O" Level history was also unique.
well it is america who is responsible for war on terror so called which is itself created by US and RAW themselves by buying these hypocrites, not all but many

Just for the record my formal education was awfull… I learned what I know now many years after I left Khotee School mainly by attending Semesters at various Universities and by invitation from various Proffesors etc…
Well I think governments should not interfere so much in Education. Children especially need to be allowed to think freely and not see certain subjects simply as career pathways. For example theres too much focus on curricular subjects over basic subjects like health and fitness.
Theres so many children these days that grew up without learning to take a fall properly or a roll, sounds silly but like I say often thers no point learning things like E=MC2 that have little practical application, and also subjects need to be mixed together to give a better flavour and a full basket of knowledge.
I used to be terrible at Maths and Science but then I was taught the History behind it all and suddenly it all made sense... History shoudl be tied in with other subjects to make it worthwhile.
With regards to Pakistani history we need to be told the story with as little Bais as possible, to get the full story. Children and even adults need to be taught History not as if it was some political or social tool to shape them but like a peoples tool. Everyone should be able to appreciate the truth and learn from the good, bad and ugly aspects of History.

Does reading books of your older siblings count? I remember about the bogra formula...
i did take pak studies but i seriously dont even remember the course content...we did the constitution we did some geography but thats all i can remember .....but what i now find ironical is that all of our subjects were taught in english language except urdu.
Thats extrodinary! Back in the early 90’s I left High school in a huff with the Masterjee becuase I did not believe learning English or French would help me in any way as at the time I had no intention of going abroad… hence I thought English irrelavant… Look at me now. How cruel Kismet is eh?
