Re: History of Pashtuns series
This means the Afghans kept on attacking mughals all these years and we had the marattas from the other side?
Re: History of Pashtuns series
Marathas, unike Afghans, were not chronically agitated against mughals. It was shivaji who became the problem. Shivaji became active against mughals and adilshahis of bijapur in 1657-1659 but in 1666 shivaji was totally defeated by aurangzeb and had to surrender all of his territories and sons to mughals. The war with Afghans costed mughals alot. Their attention and resources got directed towards north-west and aurangzeb himself had to come to attock to deal with the afghan insurgency. This provided breathing space to shivaji, in the absence of aurangzeb, he became active again and started making against bijapur while avoiding mughals. I believe the decade long war Afghans led to the weakening of Mughal empire. Against marathas, aurangzeb heavily recruited Afghans (as rajputs were not available). But due to khushal khan khattak’s preaching, the much needed afghan recruitment in mughal army began to decline. In the next century , marathas formed maratha empire and afghans formed durrani empire, both reduced empire of aurangzeb to delhi.
