History of Numerology

Re: History of Numerology

But how could people measure distance between earth and different stars without using numbers? I mean can we say that astrology is older than numerology?

Re: History of Numerology

Nojomi k paas jana mana hai...nojomi is an astrologer right ?

Re: History of Numerology

Why would an astrologer want to measure the distance between the earth and stars? - I've never heard of such a thing

Re: History of Numerology

Peace LP

There is this Hadees for stars:

“Allaah created these stars for three purposes: to adorn the heavens, to stone the devils and as signs by which to navigate. Whoever seeks anything else in them is mistaken and does not benefit from them, and he is wasting his time and effort in seeking something of which he has no knowledge.” (Saheeh al-Bukhaari, Baab fi’l-Nujoom, 2/240)

The study of the stars is divided into two kinds:

1- Study of the influence of the stars (astrology)
2- Study of the positions and movements of the stars (astronomy)

While astrology is not allowed because it leads to shirk, astronomy is allowed.

Islam Question and Answer - Astrology vs. astronomy

Re: History of Numerology

:jazak:
How abt numerology? What is Islam’s stand on numerology?

Re: History of Numerology

Ok I just got to knew the difference between astrology and astronomy. Seems that while astrology (Study of the influence of the stars) may be independent of numerology, but astronomy (Study of the positions and movements of the stars) may involve numerology.

Re: History of Numerology

If destiny is preordained, then there must be some method of predicting it.

In numerology, all things, like Date of birth, first name, last name, all are unified in a single digit by adding while in astrolgy, only position of stars with reference to time and birth is calculated. Like at this time where was mangal positioned, in which nakshtra etc.

Astrology needs to know only position of certain planets in I think 12 grihas, houses, Astronomy is complete science:)

Re: History of Numerology

Islamic teaching discourages for unnecessary curiosity. Although, its believed that everything is written, but one can find verses in Quran, which say that the 'human beings get what they strive for'.

Re: History of Numerology

For clarity - Astrology is considered haram in Islam, just as is palmistry, and all such tricks of the soothsayers ... Numerology is not a method for predicting future, but it is a way to look at patterns that support nature. There is a difference between Islamic numerology from the numerology of other nations.

Mathematics for astronomy is again is neither numerology nor is it for astrology. However to make things more confusing modern astrologers use astronomy/mathematics to add futher sophistication to their tricks.

Re: History of Numerology

What is the difference between islamic numerology and other numerology?

Re: History of Numerology

I think you need to clarify this statement. Islam does not discourage curiosity or the seeking of answers, and who is to decide what is unnecessary curiosity or not.

In fact Islam tells us to ask questions - that we should not blindly follow, but be informed in our choices - our faith and our practice and understanding of the world around us should be enlightened and not blind faith or practice.

Re: History of Numerology

Ah it appears there is a numerology aspect to astrology - here is the link:

Astrology and numerology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Again you will see how numbers represent symbols/constellations and that is the significance … astrology has no Islamic basis, but it appears various orders and faiths utilised numbers to represent complex things in order to maintain brevity and ease.

Re: History of Numerology

Well numerology is not a fixed system that crosses all cultures - each culture has its own method. Unlike mathematics which cannot be made unique to each culture numerology is definitely not a universal language ... it is the group name for a number of different systems ... The Islamic numerology system is based on the abjad table and in other instances it is applied to matching a linguistic meaning to a physical property of the structure of a given verse, chapter or the whole Qur'an. It is undertaken to show that the perfection of the scripture is such that it could not have been humanly possible to create the Islamic scripture as well as unravel some implied meanings in letters of the Qur'an. Numerology on the abjad system has been applied on the stand alone letters of the Qur'an to derive some possible wisdoms.

Re: History of Numerology

By unnecessary curiosity, I mean running after things like what will happen in the life of a particular person. 'Ye hafta kaisa rahe ga' type things :)

You are right that Islam encourages to ponder on God's nature and talk about 'Ilm ul Yaqeen' and 'Ain ul Yaqeen'. Even as per Quran, Prophets like Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) asked Allah to demonstrate, how He will give life to the dead ones, which shows that Islam encourages positive curiosity.

Re: History of Numerology

I had just one experience with an astrologer when I was studying in Class 12, a panditji, predicted everything about me and my brother when we were in patiala during winter vacation. to this date, both of searching him but couldn't locate him:(

Re: History of Numerology

:hmmm: Why are you searching him.. How his predictions proved?

Re: History of Numerology

His predictions proved 100% correct and that is why we are searching for him. me and my brothers are twins, I am four minute elder, all he needed was place and time of birth, after declaring everything, in which many things were common between us, he took only a bowl of flour, he didn’t touch money, he said he is devotee of mata saraswati(godess of knowledge) and won’t touch Laxmiji(godess of money). Panditji was hindustani for sure, because he spoke in heavily sanskritized accent. He was “gayab” within minutes after leaving my house premises.

Re: History of Numerology

No doubt that this subject exist and though Islam discourages to indulge in such activities, there are reference in Quran (including the birth of Moses predicted by astrologers) which proves that this existed for centuries.

Re: History of Numerology

Even Sikhi, Rehat Maryada, says Sikhs should not believe in astrology, but that pandit said the movement of moon causes tides and it is gravitational power of brihaspati (jupiter) that keeps various dhoomketus/comets away from earth, hence movement of heavenly bodies does affect human lives and individual behaviour:)

Re: History of Numerology

As we have 786 funda in Muslims, are there any numbers that are considered lucky in Hinduism / Sikhism?

Whats the story behind considering number 13 as unlucky?
