History of Maldives

Maldives as we know it is a small island country, so who are its inhabitants? What’s it’s history and how did they convert to Islam?

Re: History of Maldives

ibn batuta visited maldives right?

Re: History of Maldives

About the middle of the twelfth century the people of Maldives converted from Buddhism to Islam when a pious Muslim from north Africa rid the land of a terrible demon. (The demon had demanded a young virgin each month - and the Muslim hero offered to take the place of the girl. Before the sacrifice, he recited the Koran throughout the night, and the demon could do nothing out of fear of the Sacred Word.) These islands rise only a few feet above the surface of the sea and stretch for about 475 miles like a white pearl necklace.

Re: History of Maldives

Isn't it supposed to be the first country to disappear because of global warming and how low it lies? Bangladesh is going to be in trouble as well apparently..

Re: History of Maldives

Are you implying we needn't bother learning their history? :D
