Anybody know anything about it - particulrly in Indian-Pakistani culture?
For starters, let me say these…
It is soo much a part of Indian and Pakistani culture that almost everyone wears them- while in many other parts of the world it is merely a fashion statement of a minority.
Bangles have been a part of many cultures across the world. Also, Bangles have been described in Ramayana, an epic 4500 years old.
If you understand english, you will know what exactly I have asked in my post.
If you cannot contribute positively to the question being asked, go back to your madrassah hole and learn what they preach. Park your hatred outside this thread, if you wanna contribute.
Enjoy making fun of me Vaneeza! I am glad I can make you happy! BTW: In future, If you wanna counter my argument, please do so in the same thread.
More info on bangles? Anybody know anything about it.
Different cultures have it. Even some native australian tribes have bangles. It seems to me, it is came up simultaneously in many parts of the world.
I mentioned Ramayana because, there is a specific description on the reflection in Bangles in it and how Seeta saw the reflection of Rama in it. The point is, "Bangles are mentioned there".
Kumar, I find the topic interesting but have no historical information to add.
I certainly am interested to know that this was mentioned in ancient Indian texts. Most Muslims in the Indo-Pak subcontinent have hindu forefathers, and that is no reason to be ashamed. It makes us what we are and I am very comfortable with this.
I believe women's ornamentation is as old as the human race... probably there are traces going back as far as we can go.
But perhaps you were speaking of glass bangles. I think they are unique to our culture, My mother in law who is a very staunch muslim constantly scolds me for not wearing them. When I told her that I found it hard to work wearing bangles she scolded me and told me, "Beta yeh husband ke liye pehente hain" - makes no sense to me! She couldn't explain it either. That must be a hindu tradition (and that too limited to the part of India her family originated from). But bangles have no religion, they're just beautiful ornaments.....
Dunno the history - I think I read that Hazrat Ismael's wife wore bangles among other jewellery items. About glass bangles, there was a documentary on PTV once they said that the first glass bangle machine was made in Pak.
In many parts of Pak it's considered as suhag ki nishani, probably because of the khanak and colours. So we probably have glass bangles because they are easier to make, and easier to get them in different colours and shapes to match our cloths. I can't imagine an eid without bangles, my Ammi jee used to say that 'bhai ki tang mat karo warna eid pe chooRiyaaN nahiN dilwae ga'.
