Historical Figures in Heer Waris Shah

I’ve started reading Heer by Waris Shah recently and so far I’ve come across few historical figures mentioned in the epic. The names were unknown to me so searched on google and came across some interesting facts about them. I will add more names as I go through the book.

**1. Rani Koklan

**Rani Koklan was mentioned when Ranjhay’s seven bhabis were taunting him for not doing any work and that he should find himself a woman who can cook for him.

Tethe wal he rannaN walaonaiN da rani koklaN mehal tooN laah liawiN

Here’s what I found about Rani Koklan:

***Kamalia **is a land of ancient history. The river Ravi flowed through a thick forest 400 B.C. A settlement was peopled with boatmen not with as large population as other castes.Majority of them belonged to Khokhar caste. These people were acknowledged as tenacious, industrious and warriors with peace-loving nature, but undaunted and undefeatable.

This Jungle was to the south west of Sandal Bar, the very place of settlement of Kamalia situated 35 kilometers away in the east from District Toba Tek Singh. In 326 B.C having defeated the Al-exander of Greek, Raja Porus of Jehlum came to this Jungle to attack Harrappa. But Khokhar chief, Chohar Khan with the help of different tribes faced the Al-exander bravely and Sandal Bar was named after his name.

The Al-exander moved away and the population of this settlement of boatmen began increasing. The scattered wild tribes began to settle there. Thus a thickly populated town came into existence. In the 4[SUP]th[/SUP] century, the ruler of this place was Raja Surcup who had managed a boundary wall around his city. This fort was well known after the name of Raja Sarcup, a cruel and cunning ruler. Being player of Chousar, he played with bet of cutting head off. He, through foul play, would defeat his opponent and, cutting head off, hang it on the gate of his fort. Just to keep his terror alive. Raja Risaloo was the son of Raja Salia. Hun with his ruling period from 375 B.C to 413 B.C. Hearing the fame of Raja Sarcup, Raja Risaloo came to play game of Chousar with him. He defeated Raja Sarcup and cut his head off. Then he made his daughter, Rani Koklan, his wife. Raja Risaloo was very fond of outing and hunting. So he kept Rani Koklan with him. He had got built summer and winter rest houses where Rani Koklan stayed. Once Raja Risaloo went for hunting in the surrounding of Hazara, leaving behind Rani Koklan alone. Raja of attoch, Hodi Bin Bakram happened to pass that way. A chance meeting between Raja Hodi and Rani Koklan drew closer which kept on and on. When Raja Risaloo came to know this romance, he murdered Raja Hodi in the Jungle and, making Kababs out of his flesh, made her eat. When Rani Koklan came to know it, she, jumping out of the window of Rest House, embraced death. Thus, the chapter of the tale of this land came to close.

re: Historical Figures in Heer Waris Shah

aargh...can someone change the title from "Historian" to "Historical"?

re: Historical Figures in Heer Waris Shah

Nice thread. Waiting for more.

BTW, can you translate the line (Tethe wal he rannaN walaonaiN da rani koklaN mehal tooN laah liawiN), *as it is quite difficult to undersatnd Roman Punjabi.

*

re: Historical Figures in Heer Waris Shah

tethay = you or you have

wal = skill

rannan = women

walawnay = to suduce/entice

rani koklan = queen koklan

mehal = palace

toun = from

laa liawin = bring her

Ranjhay's SILs taunt him by saying, "if you're so charming and you know how to lure women then go and come back with Queen Koklan with you.

Re: Historical Figures in Heer Waris Shah

2- Raja Bhoj

*“Rajay Bhoj day mukh lagam day kay charh doriyan ho toonay hariyoni”
*
This was when Ranjha was retaliating against his bhabis…it translates, " you witches, women like you can even make fool out of a king like Raja Bhoj, you can mount them like horses".

There’s a whole page dedicated to Raja Bhoj on wiki.
“The main reason for this is that Hindus have always remembered philosophers, poets and scholars much more than kings merely decorated with military success. A king who did good to the people was much more embedded in the collective memory of the Hindus than a king who conquered vast territories. Raja Bhoja definitely stood out in this regard as one of historical India’s most remarkable intellectuals with an astonishing variety of interests and oceanic knowledge.”

Though I can’t find the specific incident of a woman or women riding on his back. :frowning:

Re: Historical Figures in Heer Waris Shah

I’ll add legendary characters as well from now on.

So Ranjha carries on arguing with his sisters in law and blames them (or women like them) for destroying the clans of Kurus and Pandavas with their rage.

Kuru Pandvan di safa gaal satti zara gal day naal haryaaryo ni

**3- Kuru

**King Kuru was the ancestor of Kauravas and Pandavas. Kurukshetra is named after king Kuru.

4- Pandava
5 warrior brothers in Mahabharta, Yudhistira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and sahadeva.

[Pandava - Wikipedia

5](Pandava - Wikipedia)- Ravan of Lanka

and Ranjha also blames them for Ravan’s defeat.

*Ravan Lank lutaa ka gard hoya karan tussan day hi hatyaryo ni

*Ravan was king of Lanka.

Re: Historical Figures in Heer Waris Shah

Interesting :k:

Do post the meaning of lines where these persons are stated.

BTW, Ravan was defeated due Hanoman. Why Waris Shah blamed it on women. Sita didn’t directly play any role in destroying Ravan.

Re: Historical Figures in Heer Waris Shah

I’ll try to translate the verses word by word next time…it’s time consuming but I’ll do it if you’re interested.

About Ravan’s destruction…Sita did have a direct or indirect involvement in it but i can’t find the details anywhere. This is what it says it on wiki, “Vedavati is said to have been reborn as Sita, causing Ravana’s death and winning Vishnu (as Rama) as her husband.”

The verse about Ravan translates to:

*Ravan Lank lutaa kay gard hoya karan tussan day hi hatyaryo ni

lutaa kay* = to lose

gard *hoya *= became dust

karan tussan day hi = all because of you

*hatyarya ni *= o female assassins

Re: Historical Figures in Heer Waris Shah

@Southie Uncle can enlighten us on this in a better way. But as far as know, Raam-Seeta story was limited to one ‘Janam’ and Ravan was defeated due to his own companion Hanoman. Thats why we have famous idiom in Urdu ‘Ghar ka bhedi Lanka Dha’ay’.

Re: Historical Figures in Heer Waris Shah

Sure, perhaps Southie can do that. I have almost zero knowledge about Hindu mythology.

Re: Historical Figures in Heer Waris Shah

Anyone knows about these characters mentioned by Waris Shah?

Re: Historical Figures in Heer Waris Shah

During Waris Shah's era Punjab was under attacks of Nadir Shah, Ahmed Shah Abdali and Sikh army.

Waris Shah refers Sikh army as 'Katak Punjab', Ahmed Shah Abdali as 'Katak Qandhar' and Nadir Shah Durrani as 'Qazalbash Jallad'.

Re: Historical Figures in Heer Waris Shah

^ whats kattak? and Nadir Shah a jallad? :hehe:

Re: Historical Figures in Heer Waris Shah

we consider our times to be tumultuous, the situation was far worse in the past.

Re: Historical Figures in Heer Waris Shah

Kattak is ‘Jatha’. Waris Shah and Bulleh Shah got education from same Madarsa in Qasoor. Both were student of Molvi Ghulam Murtaza. Bulleh Shah said about Abdali ':

Khada Peeta wahi da, baki Ahmed Shahi da
