re: Historic Thread: 2nd Test @ Headingley, Pakistan STUFF Australia after 15 years
I am the first person who w’d like to see the back of Farhat but I just read a chat session between Osman Samiuddin, Andrew Miller and fans and in it Osman mentioned that in 20 innings, Salman Butt & Imran Farhat have had 2 century stands, and 5 or 6 fifty stands which is actually quite decent.
Osman:
**Pakistan have had this problem of not finishing games for some time now actually, but I just feel that the nucleus of this side, with the bowlers it has and some of the batsmen, can really become a half-decent side soon if - and it is always a big IF - the PCB can not screw it all up. **
Osman:
Umair I felt as you did before this Test but I was actually quite impressed by Azhar, more for his temperament and ability to hang around than anything else. That kind of solidity is no bad thing at one down. U Akmal is the best batsman in the side no doubt but he is also almost as inexperienced as Azhar really. I think maybe he should come four and Amin five but really all three have played less than 10 Tests between them so its not that much in it.
**Osman: **
I think the captaincy might have come at just the wrong time for Butt even though I think he might do a reasonable job of it for some reason. But again, these are not ideal circumstances - they had to appoint someone and he was scoring runs. I have a suspicion that he might adapt to it well - he is a confident guy, he does lose concentration too often for me, but he is batting well, he has the respect of guys in the side. I just hope it doesn’t affect his batting.
Osman:
I was a bit shocked by the amount of disregard some in the English press whipped up for Afridi’s batting and his retirement…it was hardly a crime. But Vic Marks in The Observer made some good points, especially in recalling that horrid 1988 summer series against the West Iindies when England changed four captains in four Tests
Osman:
Hahahahahaha Hussain, you and only another 170 million want the answer to that. To be absolutely fair, Farhat did score runs in New Zealand and Australia and his partnership with Butt is working - I will get some stats in a sec - and given that the partnership is working I don’t think it should be broken. It reminds me, in a very watered down way, of Aakash Chopra and Sehwag - one was scoring runs, the other was at least hanging around helping the team make fifty
Osman:
Back to Farhat, I think in ten Tests together they have some 5 or 6 fifty partnerships and a couple of hundred stands - even in Lord’s they made 51 second time round so in recent Pakistan terms, they’re Greenidge-Haynes virtually!
Osman:
But not to sound like an Imran Farhat lover or anything, yes, he does need to score a few more runs and not get out to long hops from debutant leggies when set
Osman:
He might be the next captain you never know. Farhat that is. if Butt develops a limp that is, though I might be a better shout
