Hiring decision for a contractor with an 'attitude' !

i am in a situation where i have a contractor who has been working in my team for about a year now. i am responsible for him as a lead for the project but of course my manager has the final say in hiring him. i hired him at the beginning of the program. i think he has to be atleast 10 yrs older than i am (i am the youngest in the team anyways).

some background: i have had some arguments with him and he can be disrespectful (rude, childish, unprofessional) sometimes and other times he is pretty cheerful. he had been unemployed for a while before we hired him. in the beginning, my manager and i sat down with him to have a little ‘chat’ about his attitude but i don’t think you can change somebody’s personality.

my team and i have performed well and of course at the management level they are not fully aware of everything. this guy is technically sound which is why i hired him but can be difficult to work with sometimes. i had a discussion with my manager about this recently because of an incident and it came down to if i had an option of hiring him or not having a replacement (hiring can be a painful process). i am not sure if his work is worth the hassle of working with him.

due to some org changes, my manager did not have the direct authority to hire him and there is another manager (whom is now my manager also and i have worked for him before) who asked me to check with this contractor to see if he would be interested in working as a full time for a potential position. i already replied to him that yes he would be. also, my previous manager did ask my new manager to see if he can hire him full time since of course overall his ‘work’ performance is better than most.

i am not sure how things will be once and if he does get hired full time since the current project is winding down.

i initially considered atleast mentioning it to the new manager that i am not sure if he will be a good fit for the team (or something along those lines) but then i decided against it since 1) he did not specificallyask my opinion (and only mentioned in an email that he wanted to hire him and if i can check if he will be interested in a position..note that we are losing somebody else from the team also so he would be the replacement and i am sure it seems like the easier option). 2) and secondly i wonder if i need to learn to deal with all kinds of ppl and should consider this as a learning experience.

any comments/suggestions ? should i mention it to my manager ?

I would not hire him though because I have gone through these kind of scenarios a couple of times. If I know that this guy has attitude problems which arise time and again I would not hire him and I would let my manager know.

Heartbeat,

From HR perspective, when a person is a permanent employee , their attitude can halt their progression upward in the company until something nasty happens , in which case they can lose their job.

But when someone is a contractor and you are facing problems in the team , HR shouldnt renew his contract nor offer him a permanent role in the company.

As far as you are concerned, if there is a HR team present in your company, they should do a reference check on this guy and in the process contact you ... in which case you should be pretty open and let your views be known on him... however if they are not bothering to reference him and only looking at his performance .. then you should remain on the back seat and let them deal with it, though do ensure that you drop a line to the recruitment officer in your company letting them know of your concerns and leave the rest on to them.

There is one more thing, hiring becomes a disaster when a wrong person comes onboard ...but once a wrong person is onboard, its better to hire a new person to replace him rather then continuing to let the team spirit be affected negatively.

In your case specifically, you need to find out how much of a disruptive member this guy is? are you as a manager feeling it or are his peers and other members of the team feeling the same way? is his bad attitude taking over his performance? how occasional is his bad attitude? ... if you then determine that he is contributing worse rather then better into the team , then time to let him go ... but if he is still contributing better more then worse , then bear him with a stronger management strategy ... draw up a plan and ensure he remains tightly reined in ...
