India puts nuclear plants on alert

NEW DELHI: India has put its nuclear power plants on alert and tightened security after intelligence about possible attacks, a report said on Monday.

The step comes after a man arrested in the US on charges of plotting attacks in India was found to have travelled to Indian states that have nuclear installations, the Press Trust of India (PTI) said.

PTI quoted unnamed sources in the Home Ministry as saying the state governments had been asked to step up security around their nuclear plants as a “precautionary measure”.

Precautions: “The step is precautionary in nature. The states have been asked to increase the vigil and patrolling to thwart any sabotage attempt aimed at these vital facilities,” a Home Ministry official was quoted as saying by the news agency.

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), located in Mumbai, has been put on the highest alert. The Indian Navy, Coast Guard and all other security agencies have been directed to take precautionary measures to protect the installations, most of which are located near the coast.

A senior Home Ministry official, who was not authorised to speak to the media, said some states had been asked to tighten security around “vital installations”, without giving any details.

**US authorities arrested David Headley, a US citizen, on October 3 on charges of hatching a plot to attack a Danish newspaper.

New Delhi had asked to interview Headley over possible plans to attack Indian targets and are investigating various visits to the country.

The US government said Headley also travelled to Pakistan where he communicated with members of Lashkar-e-Tayyaba.**

I think we have fed a bit of nonsense, but far less than you guys have been fed all your life. now there was nothing to bring Pakistan into this Indian nuke alert.

the guys we sent to Kargil, fought very well and kept the enemy at bay in their own area for weeks, until our spineless leadership at the time pulled the plug from supporting them.

and i guess both countries have enough safegaurds in place, if they can build it, they certainly can protect and use them. the hike its not safe thats not safe its just media campaign by some countries for vested interests. the only country who has used nukes or have reported missing nukes is United States of America and worst nuke accident goes to Russia.

Pak nukes are not few eggs in basket hanging on a tree that some lunatics or US guys can just grab and take these away.

the highly efficient US and nato couldnt handle afghans, they and others who are having wet dreams of de nuking Pakistan will stay as distent dreams or nightmares.

Really, these guys were on the verge of occupying the whole of Kashmir. If it was not for NS, the Pakistani flag would have been flying on Red Fort right.

No i didnt say they were on verge of taking whole kashmir at that point, but they were certainly on plan to keep the blockade of supply route of Indian forces at Siachen. I dont think Pakistanis want to conquer India, the only issue we have with India is Kashmir, if that is solved peacefully , i dont think there will be wars or any hatred between two countries. Kargil and Kashmir is still international disputed territory.

That is not what the leadership in Pakistan claimed at that time ... their claim was that they wanted to "highlight" the Kashmir issue !!!

The international dispute is over Kashmir, Kargil, Gilgit, Muzaffrabad etc etc..... but that can only be resolved through talks .... so it is in the interest of regional and world peace that Pakistan should stop providing havens for terror groups within its territories and solve this issue by talks .... simple !!!!

I am sure that extremest establishment member has hidden that Nuclear bomb somewhere under his chaaarpiee ... right? and as soon as the LeT guys will come to pick it up he will go like
