Hindu men/women and interfaith marriages

*World Weddings 10.00-10.30pm BBC2

This episode illustrates the difficulties faced by an Indian couple whose love straddles the deep religious divisions that exist between the Hindu and Muslim communities. Will Ujjala’s love for Asad mean she is expelled from her family?*

Well I assumed that interfaith marriages were all fine and dandy in India after reading Matsui’s thread about muslim women unable to marry out but apparently this hindu girl despite having been in a disastrous marriage to a hindu previously is finding big opposition to marrying her muslim fella.

Why the insecurity?

I personally know a Hindu woman who was disowned by her Hindu parents for marrying a Muslim man.

The Sikh community leaders in big cities over here are getting very uneasy because their girls are converting to Islam and marrying Muslim boys.

On one hand they claim all paths lead to the same source, God and on the other they condemn their children for becoming Muslim and marrying Muslims.

It’s a pity really Jatts and Brahmins look so much like Pakistanis, Hinduism/Sikhism doesn’t suit them. :p

Was it on this morning or will they be showing it tonight?

That is b'cos emporor Auranzeb went to extremes to persecute Sikhs.
Guru Gobind Sing had to go into exiles otherwise he would have been killed along with his 2 sons. Aurangzeb had his son buried in a brick wall.
And this was the son of their highest religious leader. Waht do you expect.

Guru Gobind Singh was not their highest religious leader.

Guru Nanak ‘Dev Ji’ was their ‘highest’ religious leader.

It’s kind of idiotic to hate all Muslims or Islam because of the actions of an emperor, I don’t know much about Aurangzeb but my impression of the Mughals is not very good, they were far from Islam themselves.

:smack: Thanks, sorry I should’ve looked harder.

Very true, this time last yr, i went to a national womens day conference in highgate, where there were cases brought forward by various reverts, now shunned by their families, there is a clear hatred for muslims especcially.

The insecurity becasue they are losing their kurris innit kakay.

The reason is that in most cases, the woman if she is hindu is told to convert, therefore her lifestyle and what is was before is now gone, and to her family she is no different than a stranger..If she was allowed to remain hindu and do the things hindu's do, Diwali, etc, etc, then maybe the hindu family wouldnt have such a big deal about it..

Dude, Guru Nanak was the founder of the Sikh religion, Guru Nanak was born on April 15, 1469 in the Western Punjab village of Talwandi And Guru Gobind the tenth and the last Guru or Prophet-teacher of the Sikh faith, was born Gobind Rai Sodhi on Poh 7, 1723 sk/22 December 1666 allmost 200 years after the death of Guru Nanak and was respected as Muslims respect Muhammad.

We're a few centuries down the line now Sher...move on. Guru Nanak aion't here to object any more.

To some extent, Sikh people have been brainwashed (for lack of a better word) since their childhoods about what happened to their leaders during the time of the Mughals; about the murder of their last and youngest Guru (don't know the name), who was bricked up alive in a wall. There is intense hatred towards Muslims because of this and some of them have no problem expressing this hatred. There is a lot of hatred and resentment towards Muslims cause of this act.

Xtreme good for you for raising this issue. In hindu tenets there is nothing precluding this marriage. The insecurity is within that stupid family and the parents should be shot.

There are many hindu women who marry muslim men and if they wish they can convert. Nothing wrong with that. But the option should be there. That is what love is all about, it is not about I will only marry you if you convert because that is stupid.

When you take someone as a partner in life, you take them whole. beliefs, culture, etc…

Oh btw, hindu men can also marry muslim women and they don;t have to convert or anything…ain’t that a beaut!!! :flower1: SO ladies…live a little.. :nuch:

To say the insecurity is within that stupid family and not a feature throughout Indian society is pushing it a bit. I saw your thread about muslim women not being able to marry out and the question whether it was linked to insecurity and thought fair enough, it must look bad to people from other faiths.

This programme happens to be on the box tonight and from what it looks like it's not much different from hindu point of view either. I thought muslims were the ones supposed to be ultra restrictive.

And for those of you who are coming up with the Guru Nanak garbage move on. People who want to marry out don't give a $hit about 1666.

You are right xtreme....the insecurity is within the society and that society is changing so fast that for as many stories that you can post up, there are many that defy the paradigm. Take Gabru here for example. He is a muslim pakistani, his wife is hindu from India as I recall in a thread that he posted.

the distinction here is that there is nothing in the confines of the hindu faith that has this insecurity. It is afterall religion we are assigning the insecurity to. apples to apples..

Xtreme, I am not sikh but you should not offend any body by saying things like "Guru Nanak Garbage" cos someone (With stinking mind)might use the similar language for your Religious leaders. And by the way that was in a reply to an earlier post, in case you hadn't noticed.

Thats very disrespectful. Guru Nanak to them is like what our Prophet is to us. And your mudslinging (Guru Nanak Garbage) is unnecessary, since he was not the one who ordered his people not to marry Muslims. Read carefully, no one here is implying that the Sikhs do not marry Muslims because Guru Nanak said so, infact, his time was way before Emperor Aurengzeb.

It's very easy to say this. As a Muslim, honestly, I don't really worry about it but many Sikh people do think of this and do remember this event with quite a lot of passion. After all, to them, Guru Nanak was one of their holiest people.
