Hindi urdu controversy

How,why and when this conflict started?
The Hindi–Urdu controversy is an ongoing dispute—dating back to the 19th century—regarding the status of Hindi and Urdu as a single language and the establishment of a single standard language in certain areas of north and northwestern India. While the debate was officially settled by a government order in 1950, declaring Hindi as the official language, some resistance remains. The present notion among Muslims about this dispute is that Hindus abandoned Urdu Language, whereas Hindus believe that Urdu was artificially created during Muslim rule.

Re: Hindi urdu controversy

But Bollywood specially the songs are still in Urdu. I think in India English is more popular than Urdu / Hindi and used as medium of communication.

Re: Hindi urdu controversy

The conflict of Hindi-Urdu is one of the reasons quoted for establishing a new party Muslim League.

The Formation of Muslim League | NOTES FOR STUDENTS

The controversy started in 1837 and was backed by the local people’s resentment for keeping their languages subordinated to the ruler’s language Persian for centuries.

Re: Hindi urdu controversy

i have heard about ghandi also playing some role in it :hmmm:

Re: Hindi urdu controversy

Gandhi ji tried to resolve the conflict by merging Hindi-Urdu as Hindustani written both in Devanagari and Persian scripts. Personally Gandhi ji loved Urdu and learned that from Abbas Tayyabji and his daughter Rehana from Gujarat. Gandhi used to write letters to Ulema and poets in Urdu. he also had Urdu version of his newspaper- Harijan.

Re: Hindi urdu controversy

The population of Hindi heartland of Haryana, Delhi, UP, Bihar, MP always spoke hindustani, developed from Rekta, the language contains mostly persianized words, but in the heartland people speal Haryanvi, avadhi, braj, bhojpuri, maithili etc:). Hindustani is standard dilect, persianized hindustani is urdu and sanskritized hindustani is Hindi, UP wallas generally speak hindustani but official documentation is mostly done is sanskritized hindi. Even the greatest hindi writer Munshi Premchand wrote initially in Urdu as NawabRai:), Sanskritized Hindi has her own beauty which is as beautiful is far more poetically developed Persianized Urdu:)

Re: Hindi urdu controversy

But why in the presence of Hindustani language conflict (between Hindi-Urdu) raised which even formed the basis of Muslim League.

Re: Hindi urdu controversy

Language just like anyother factor can become political, a Bengali language controversy divided a country whose formation being so much apart was infeasible at first place:)
People wrote same dialect in two scripts just like Punjabi and sindhi in the controversial region, only Bengali remain untouched. Majority of culturaly adavanced muslims lived in this region, UP is to this date is divided between elites and poor muslims, Muslims still doesnot have powerful middle class.
League gained its maximum power in Bengal before toppling Unionists in Punjab and Sindh but was weak in the land from where original idea was conceived, till the election of 1946, lower caste Muslims always sided with League, League was pro landlord hence being with league in India or Pakistan never changed their situation:), Congress since Gandhi was far more near to Chammars/Harijan and pro poor than drawing room politicians of League except Jinnah:)

Re: Hindi urdu controversy

I think people are super sensitive about the language they speak and any attempt to impose another language result in incidents like Fall of Dhaka. :( While Urdu was considered as the language of Muslims, but it flourished in India too after partition.

Re: Hindi urdu controversy

i think urdu and hindi have many words common wht is spoke in india is actually hindi not urdu so i think urdu is not florished in india :snooty:

Re: Hindi urdu controversy

look at the poetry used in Indian movies and you will know in which language they write songs. From the beginning till today, Indian lyricists follow Urdu as their medium of expression. I'm not aware of the current writers, but even prominent Urdu writers like Ismat Chughtai and Qurat ul ain Haider stayed in India and there books were popular on both sides of the border.

Re: Hindi urdu controversy

yeah but they say no its hindi not urdu

Re: Hindi urdu controversy

Its basically Hindustani :) You know about Hindi and can understand a little thanks to Ekta kapoor's gayan, but if you can understand all the dialogues in bollywood movies then its because they are using Urdu rather then Hindi.
