Hindi Cinema Actor Dies
BOMBAY, India (AP) - Actor K.N. Singh, the ``gentleman villain’’ of Hindi cinema for more than six decades, died Monday at his home in Bombay, India’s movie capital. He was 91.
Krishan Narayan Singh, better known by his initials, died after a long illness, family members said.
Komal Nata, editor of the Film Information trade magazine, said Singh would be remembered as a suave villain.
He was very popular. The first thing that comes to mind is him smoking a cigar with a lock of gray hair falling on his forehead,'' said Nata. He always wore a suit, which was unusual for villains of the ‘60s.’’
He never shouted,'' Nata said. He was very cool and almost regal in his films. He was the stylish villain of Hindi cinema.‘’
Singh gave up his career as a lawyer in 1937 and brought his robust personality and chilling voice to Bombay, where he joined India’s young movie industry. India now makes more movies than any other country.
The United News of India said Singh played dandies and bad guys in more than 200 movies and was famous for his pipe-smoking, hat-wearing character of the ``gentleman villain.‘’
His funeral took place Monday. He was survived by a son, Pushkar, a television director, UNI reported.
