This might sound like a strange topic but I am interested to know about the origins of hijras/khunsay/khusray (these are various words used for them) as the are a common feature of pakistani life…
in ka origin kya hai…
are they born like that or are they made into hijray…
are they eunuchs [men castrated] or transvestites [men who dress up as women] or haemaphrodites [people born with both male female genitalia]?
And why do they have such a visible and wide-ranging role in pakistani [and even more in indian] society?
I think I know the origin of word. They used to dance in streets of bombay on a particular day and thus it was 'his day', which changed hisdey. I read this in newspaper long ago.. not kidding.
There is a book in marathi by Pramod navalkar (shiv sena mla) on Bombay underworld. It describes hijras in detail.
very few of them are abnormal as child. some are kids which are stolen and some runaway children who are abused and get used to homosexual encounters and become openly hijras. Some have voluntarily left home to join such gangs and lead this lifestyle.
Actually there is a retual to cut the male private organ on entering these groups. groups have leaders and money is shared.
NY Ahmadi..
Sorry to burst your bubble but as a recent Dawn article stated that most of these are homosexuals plyng for trade... very open society aren't we..
The whole thing cross-dressing thing started because of roving play theatres in Punjab where men play role of both sexes (almost like in shakesperean times). So it became acceptable for entertainers... thus hijrays.. who usually go for street entertainment.
Hijrays have existed from a very long time. Nothing to blame on shakespearianian theatre. They have existed long before that.
But no reason to take a politically correct attitude to them. They are often colaberating with drugs and prostitution.
ZZ... how old are you.. have you lived a couple thousand years to back your claim..
There were gays/ homosexuals since before greek times. but the cross-sressing phenomenon is a fairly new one.. and it did not start with shakesperean theatre and if you had properly read my reply you would have realised that as well.. the riving entertainers in punjab have been doing it a lot longer before shakesperean theatre did it, i mentioned it as a lot of people in this chatroom would not know about the roving panjabi theaters.
As for NYAhmadi.. good thing the bubble dinn burst cuzz. it would cause a stink up.. hehe just kiddin..
as for the maulvi story.. you can't know the truth because you were not there.. anything else is just conjecture.. but as for maulvis.. one of the maulvi near our house in karachi was fired because he made untoward moves towards a boy.. but whose story would you give more credence when you do not have any external witness.. ones word against other..
