Hijabi’s: when youre wearing a Asian/desi outfit, what dupatta do you wear on your head? Do you wear the one that came with the outfit or do you have a similar plain matched hijab? I’m asking this question because the clothes my mum brought for post-wedding have really heavy dupattas that would be awkward to wear around my face.. So do I get similar scarves to wear?
Re: Hijab and 'Asian clothes'
My sisters always wear separate scarves around their heads and then pin their dupattas to their suit.
I would say get scarves that compliment the outfits, they dont have to be the same colours as the outfit, just have to compliment it.
Re: Hijab and 'Asian clothes'
i wear the duppata that comes with or match one of my own but i don't wear anything on side.
u can still wear heavy duppatta by pinning it at the back of ur head and then bringing them in front and wrap around. It depends though. u might need to experiment.
Yeah thing is I don't want to wear my heavy dupatta on my head so I might just get contrasting colours!
Re: Hijab and 'Asian clothes'
I always wear a seperate scarf, and wear the dupatta that came with the suit on my shoulder. Sometimes it can look too matchy-matchy if you get the same colours, just get colour that compliment it.
I just think it looks more elegant if you wear the dupatta seperately to the hijab-scarf : )
Re: Hijab and 'Asian clothes'
Lots of times, if your clothes are being made on an order, you can request a plain hijab to be made with it.
Re: Hijab and 'Asian clothes'
one of my cousin's wears her duputta but pinned properly in hijab style. to be honest, it just looks so fussy and i don't like it. her sister wears a hijab in a contrasting colour and pins the duputta, looks much better.
Re: Hijab and 'Asian clothes'
i also wear scarf (contrast or sometimes matching with the dress)n dupatta on shoulders....it looks more decent than the heavy dupatta on your head...so i think u should buy scarves....
Re: Hijab and 'Asian clothes'
I used to wear the dupatta as my hijab. Then the dupattas started to get more fancy, and it would look too much.
So then I would buy hijabs that do well (like Milly said) with the outfit.
Let's say, for example, I have a turqoise suit with some pink and silver embroidary. . I would wear the suit with a pink hijab (and maybe a torquoise undercap) and have the dupatta on my shoulder and across my back and hold is under my arm.
Sometimes, if im at a casual dawat I woudlnt even bother brinign the dupatta with me.
it also depends on the dupatta itself. If its not as wide and long, then it might just work as a hijab as well.
Hijab and 'Asian clothes'
Where would I get these scarf from? My mum brought all my jaheiz from Pak and I only realised it would look better this way! Thanks for the help though guys!
Re: Hijab and 'Asian clothes'
Afshi, can you help me do my dupatta up in that way (the pink and turquoise picture) I would love to it that way. It covers the bust area very well.
Re: Hijab and 'Asian clothes'
^its easy. put the middle part of ur hijab on ur head so that both side u have equal fabric. pin it under ur neck. now wrap one end above ur head while other end stays down to cover bust.
i wear mine in similar ways. to me it looks neater n smarter than having a scarf n then a duppata on side.

Actually, I did not pin it the way Mabrook described. This is what I did.
I folded the dupatta in half lengthwise.
Then I placed the folded dupatta over my head, with one side a little longer than the other.
I took both sides to the back and tied them and brought both sides to the front again. That is, the shorter side was now where the longer side was, and the longer side was where the shorter side was.
I then took the shorter side from one corner (where it was folded), took it across my chest and pinned it to my shoulder using a safety pin.
With the longer side and still folded, I took it under my chin, over my head and brought it to the other side of my face. I then pinned it under my chin with a safety pin.
And that's it!
I did the same style in both of the pictures above.
With this style, you have the options of wearing earrings as well. I used to wear earrings - but the long dangling ones. Please no hoops.
I don't do this style anymore since the dupattas these days are really long and like to hang them along side me (make me look thinner LOL)

Where in England do you live?
When my sister doesnt have time to wait for scarves to arrive from Pakistan she goes to Southall, quality isnt all that amazing, but some of them are, you just have to hunt for them and bargin them down a lot.
Also, try the interwebs.
