Hijab - All Dressed Up

In recent years we’ve seen the hijab transform from being nothing more than a utilitarian piece of fabric that’s meant to protect the hair from being seen to something of a fashion “statement”.

What are your thoughts on this “evolution”? Is the stylish version really “new and improved” or do you think it counters the actual “modesty” that hijab is intended to portray?

The old version:

The dressed up version:

I bring this up because I was at a wedding where a girl actually commented that her mother would never let her wear the OTT adornments on her head unless she was wearing a scarf. I found this quite odd…

I used to wear a scarf in high school. It wasn’t religiously motivated, my father asked me to and i did. I got my nikkah done the summer before college and i stopped wearing the scarf in college. I wore the plain black/gray/white ones. Very simply pinned under the neck. All thru high school i felt frumpy compared to other girls… idk if it was cos of how the high school environment generally is or the fact that i didn’t really “dress up” cos i felt it defeated the purpose of the hijab. Probably a mixture of both things.

Now I see girls who dress so wonderfully and modestly with matching scarves etc… looks awesome, and elegant. It lifts up my own intention to don the hijab… iA soon. I’ve also seen the girl with the skin-tight mini dress, with leggings on to halalify it and the scarf that barely covers anything. So i guess intention matters - some girls see it as a part of themselves and it reflects in how they dress and behave.. while others throw it on as an after though/fashion accessory.

So yeah…the matching scarves and adornments can look beautiful and modest and elegant.

Re: Hijab - All Dressed Up

Yes. I see a lot more hijabis in my area these days, purely because it has become very stylish and fashionable. Same with those who wear the turban hijab, it does kinda cover the head, but it’s more for a fashionable look than a modesty principal.

I wear a hijab myself and I can really see the difference in fashions now that hijabis are becomnig more visible on social media. Personally I’m not a fan of lots of bling and camel-hump hijab, but I guess each to their own.

My real grumble is with girls who barely cover or wear tight clothes - just take the hijab off if you’re going to dress like that, rather than make it look bad

Having said that, I’ve also seen a lot of amazing styles which don’t compromise the hijab, so there’s that too.
