I want to say so much and share so many of own personal experiences just to put Confucius’s fears to rest and to address njgal’s post. But it’s going to be one long post saying pretty much just one thing… it’s NOT a big deal. It’s not a big deal. It’s not a big deal. **Catskin mentioned that it is a life changing decision. I beg to differ. **A scarf on its own doesn’t have that sort of power to turn your world around. YOU dictate your life… not a piece of cloth. Sounds to me like Confucius has MashaAllah already turned her life around for the better… a hijab is only going to act as icing on the cake. Did I mention it’s not a big deal?

I was prepared for the worst when I started wearing the hijab. Thought I wouldn’t be allowed into the labs. Thought I wouldn’t get an internship. Thought I’d lose friends. Thought they wouldn’t let me pray in college. Thought I wouldn’t get a job or get into postgrad after graduation. What I ended up learning instead was that the world isn’t all that ugly. Never have I faced discrimination (apart from being judged on the world wide web by random knowitall morons that I couldn’t care less about). Never was I more confident than I am now.

If it wasn’t that big of a deal for me here in Ireland where I am literally the only hijabi walking around in my city, I don’t see why the Brits should be shocked by the hijab in this day and age. The only way for you to find out how much influence the hijab could have on your professional life is to test it out. I was going to say you may want to talk to your non-muslim friends/colleagues but the only person who should have a say in your personal choices is you. So wear it when you feel ready. I am 99% sure that it will not do you any harm. I’d be really disappointed if the Brits turned out to be otherwise ignorant. You’ll be alrighttttt, is what I’m saying. =)

That’s because for me hijab is much more than just wearing a headscarf.
