Higher education = club membership ?

Most of the things about brain were learned from malfunctioning brains.
Some one had accident he started seeing ABC in colors.
Some one had part removed from his brain he showing seemingly normal but socially unacceptable behaviour.

So I was reading some one complaining about Pakistan selling them fake degree.
Some one might wonder “how you were able to retain a job which require a degree, with out having a degree.?”
Seriously we make people spend so much money on some thing they would not need.
Is it in the hope that among every 100,000 uni student there might be one who would actually take humanity forward ?
Cant we just give them library cards with professors email so that 1 guy/girl in 100,000 can send his/her questions ?

What you think?

Re: Higher education = club membership ?

degree =/= working competence

but

educational system of 20th century say so

I don’t understand how in middle ages there were people who knew about so many topics and these very people introduced new ideas n stuff.

Re: Higher education = club membership ?

This happens, coz people tend to equate education with a degree. Merely getting a degree does not automatically mean you’ve received the education. Didn’t we just see someone claiming to have a computer science degree yet is weak in math?

That said, I think, the college education is not about just imparting a specific knowledge base, but more about inculcating such other things as setting and achieving goals, sticking with a ‘plan’ to the end, instill a love of learning and laying a foundation for future learning. The specialized knowledge is only a small part of the whole.

Re: Higher education = club membership ?

Makes me want to thank God for deciding to educate my kids at home…but then again, wouldn’t be able to afford the expanses and luxury of homeschooling my kids if it wasn’t for my husband’s college degree…so I don’t know.

Re: Higher education = club membership ?

orville and wilbur wright - bicycle shop walas. but were able to educate themselves to build the first wind tunnel, build and analyze aerofoils, develop the aircraft control system which is 90% of what still works inside what boeing makes.

but 99.99% of cycle repair walay no maar any teer.

bottomline - if you are good, you might still make it without a proper education. if you are average and skip school, you will flip burgers for your friends who went to college.

I really believed in that idea after watching that Good will Hunting movie but as soon as you get older you begin to realize that the realities are just too hard to handle. The sad fact is , it has always been and it will always be a race doesnt matter you are a cripple or you have a whole lot of baggage to carry around, it is going to get you, that race. That is why i always say we, this generation is not capable of producing people like picasso, Einstein or even the beatles. You know, too much to look after …

Re: Higher education = club membership ?

But is it capable of creating a Zukerberg, Larry Page, Elizabeth Holmes etc? Innovation is always marching forward, moulds are broken every day and you cannot compare anyone from the past do the stuff of future. And it has nothing to do with a degree.. but everything to do with education. We might look down upon Gen X, but among them will be newer breed of innovators that will create better future.

Re: Higher education = club membership ?

Not sure if Facebook is really an innovation. Or twitter. Or paypal. Or uber.

Some may end up with HUGE markets. So they are business innovations I guess. we have come to associate all Internet related business leaders as innovators. While the true innovators in the Sciences and Engg don’t get the notoriety they deserve.

Re: Higher education = club membership ?

I will have to disagree with you on facebook, twitter and paypal. Facebook changed the way businesses interact with their customers, it is not just for selfie-obsessed teenage kids anymore. Twitter revolutionized the way we get and propagate news and paypal was the first to get launch electronic payments, which you will see more and more of going forward. Uber is sufficiently disruptive, but not sure its effect will be felt outside the metropolitan areas.

One can point to their misuses, but then that has been a challenge for every new technology.

Re: Higher education = club membership ?

I get what you are saying. But no new discovery or invention was made. While the markets are huge, I can’t see the Zuckerbergs in the same class as an Einstein. Or a Khurana.
