high tech R&D in pakistan

can anyone tell me about the research being done in pakistan on followings:

semi conductors, air-air missiles, helicopters, jet engines.

whether at individual level or organiational level.

bco i’ve heard that someone has made helicopter in pak; in another a uet lahore student claimed he’s made a jet engine etc.

anyone with detail is welcomed

hey,

i'm in pakistan but unfortunately not aware of the details...i do suggest though that you visit the websites of some pakistani engineering colleges like NUST, UET, NED, GIKI etc, and email the faculty there and ask them, they might provide you with answers...

There is some nice DSP r&d going on in nust, I used to be involved about three years ago. If you want, PM me and I will send you the email addresses of those that are still involved.

Sameer,

GIKI has a very good metallurgical department, a couple of the scientists there are absolutely top notch. Since most GIKI grads are geared towards foreign Unis, most of the academic projects are very research oriented, and are often sponsored by army/industry people.

I know in my batch someone made a fairly competant stealth material fabrication system.

NUST has recently started collaborating with a couple of foreign Unis, but from what I gleaned, most of it can be likened to the "research" equivalent of outsourcing.

As for the rest, air-air, helos, jets, most of this kind of research is done in military owned labs Aero/AWC is one of them, I knew a couple of more, the names of which for the life of me I cant remember right now. Depending on who you ask, the answers range from colossal amounts of incompetance, to very good, if secretive work. The line probably lies somewhere in between.

I thank all of you guys Irem, ravage & Spock (I'll contact you thru PM soon)who took interest in this topic. I read in urdu "Science Magazine" of early 90's (magazine ceased to exist now) about an AAM developed on orders of Gen. Zia during the period 83-87 at a secret place. Missiles name was "Sohrab" and the magazine included the interview of its designer who's name I cant remeber (perhaps Ch. Fazl). Magazine had taken that interview from weekly " Takbeer".

I have never heard about that missile afterwards from any corner. Any friend who has the record of all the "Science Magazines" can help me.
OR someone who had been a consistent reder of "Takbeer"

Why I'm so anxious?

I know that AWC of NESCOM (or there might some other organization as well) is working on advanced air weaponary including AAM's but my concern is that where that missile gone if we had developed so?????As far as I remember from that Interview, the developer claimed that it was fully developed and it was highly successful when tested in 1987 but due to US pressure Gen. Zia ordered not to begin serial production or deploy it.

Is there someone who can take one our forgotten feat into light??????

The best place would be the library at EME college, too bad Im not there anymore.

ET went down pretty bad digitalsurgeon, in 2002. Their principle research was directed towards one specialised chip, and just when they were completing it Intel came out into the market with that chip at a third of the price.

Last I heard they were trying to regroup after the initial members had sort of parted ways, but its not what it used to be.

True... I was also working there at that time. One of the guys there (our professor) made another company after parting ways, CARE and also an institute called CASE (Center for Advanced Scientific Research).

enabling technologies, these guys used research on microcontrollers, semi conductores, embedded hardware. i'm not that much updated, so don't know the current situation.

like a typical pakistani joint venture, it has now busted or lost his founding members!

mostly area that relate to defence in pakistan stays un known.

personal y I know one company that make semi conductors in pakistan with its own patents.
Micro Electronics Inc. Lahore

a major contractor for defence and police electronics equipment in Pakistan.

another firm associated to missle building secretly, ZIA used to visit it.
