Hyderabad (named for Haider , a named used to refer to Hazrat Ali (ra)) was originally founded by the Shia Qutb Shah dynasty of Indian princes as their model city capital.
Even after its seizure and incorporation into the Mughal Empire by Emperor Aurungzeb as part of his efforts to wipe out Shia Islam from India, Shia Muslims continued to dominate much of the religious, political and cultural scene of Hyderabad. In fact, most Islamic activities in Hyderabad during the era of the Sunni nizams had a very strong Shia influence, with Sunnis and Hindus too participating in Shia activities during time such as Muharram. The Nizams of Hyderabad normally installed Shia nobles to positions of power and influence (i.e as Prime Minister). Hyderabad therefore attracted a large number of Persian Shia scholars as immigrants.
