Assalam alaikum,

The issue of tattooing and the usage of henna was raised recently. The
following is an exposition on the subject:

Abu Huraira (ra) said:
"A woman who used to practise tattooing was brought to 'Umar. 'Umar got up
and said, “I beseech you by Allah, which of you heard the Prophet saying
something about tattooing?” I got up and said, “0 chief of the Believers! I
heard something.” He said, “What did you hear?” I said, “I heard the Prophet
(addressing the ladies), saying, ‘Do not practise tattooing and do not get
yourselves tattooed.’”
[Bukhari 7.830]

In the pre Islamic days, at the time of death of the husband, “the widow
would to wear fake hair and have their bodies tattooed with indigo”.
[Manners and Customs of the Pre Islamic Arabs (1891), Mohammedan Tracts
1891-93]

“Tattooing means to prick the skin with a needle and inject kohl or some
other substance to change the skin colour to blue or green. This is haraam
according to the consensus of the scholars.”
[al-Mughni 1/94; Al-Lu’lu’ wa’l-Marjaan, part 2, p. 175]

A woman who had a tattoo before accepting Islam asked whether she would need
to have it surgically removed. The reply from the scholar reads:

“As for this tattoo which cannot be removed except through this kind of
surgery, you do not have to do this, because it is too difficult and will
cause pain and hurt. Allaah says: “. and [Allaah] has not laid upon you in
religion any hardship.” [al-Hajj 22:78]. Your regret and dislike of that,
and your determination never to do it again is sufficient. Also, Islam wipes
out what came before, so in this case leaving it as it is should not cause
you any harm, in sha Allaah.

A question asked regarding remporary tattoos, i.e. not real tattoos but
things such as henna, generated the following:

“If it is a picture of an animal etc., then it is haraam and is not allowed.
If it is a picture of trees or similar patterns, then it is OK, but in my
view it is better not to do this, because it imposes an extra burden on
women of spending and having to take care of these patterns. So it is better
not to do it.”
[Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen for al-Da’wah magazine, no. 1741, 7/2/1421 AH, p. 36]

Abdullah ibn Abbas (ra) said:
"When a man who had dyed himself with henna passed by the Prophet, he said:
“How fine this is!” When another man who had dyed himself with henna and
katam passed by, he said: “This is better than that”. Then another man who
had dyed himself with yellow dye, passed by, he said: “This is better than
all that.”
[Abu Dawood 4199]

Aisha (ra) said the Prophet said:
“…If you (referring to another woman) were a woman, you would make a
difference to your nails, meaning with henna”.
[Abu Dawood 4154]

It can therefore be shown that it was a custom at that time to use henna.
Also there is nothing prohibiting the usage of henna on nails as a ‘nail
polish’:

“…If any barrier or substance with weight, such as wax, is found on the
body, it would invalidate one’s ablution unless it is removed and the
ablution is performed again. Coloring, like henna, is permissible, as it
does not affect the ablution’s correctness…”.
[Fiqh us Sunnah 1.43]

Also, I came accross this hadith which may have been reference to a ‘face
mask’ - anyone who has a sister/wife/daughter is probablyfamiliar with such
things ;0)

Umm Salamah (ra) said:
“…The Prophet came to visit me when AbuSalamah died, and I had put the
juice of aloes in my eye (as I had sore eyes). He asked : “What is this,
Umm Salamah?” I replied: “It is only the juice of aloes and contains no
perfume”. He said: “It gives the face a glow, so apply it only at night and
remove it in daytime, and do not comb yourself with scent or henna, for it
is a dye”.”
[Abu Dawood 2298]

In this hadith the prohibition to use henna, was because of the death of Abu
Salamah, but at other times when not mourning it is allowed.

Therefore using henna - a trend which Madonna has recently embarked upon -
is permissible, but tattooing is not.

May Allah the Almighty have Mercy and guide us all, ameen.
