Re: Henna Hair dye

Does Gina know anything about this??? Or one of the many cosmetologists we have here on GS? I am in the SAME boat right now...I want to use mehndi in my hair but dont know how to blend it to get the desirable shade.

Re: Henna Hair dye

I’m an internationally certified henna artist. What colors are you looking for in your hair? If you choose to use it, make sure it’s 100% henna, body art quality. Make sure you buy it from a reputable seller. Don’t touch the stuff in the stores, they often have green dye in it to make it look fresher, and it can turn your hair green!

If you use body art quality, and you choose to dye your hair with synthetic dyes later, it won’t be a problem.

Henna cannot lighten your hair, and it’s likely going to give you auburn highlights if your hair is dark. If you’ve got gray hair, it will turn it orange.

If you want to go darker, you can mix indigo into it.

Visit this site
Henna for Hair: Dye hair with henna, indigo, cassia … safely, beautifully!

It has photo’s and recipes to show what the person’s hair color was prior to henna, and how they made it that color. Just go ahead and follow their instructions.

Cosmetologists don’t use henna, (though I do give classes on it at esthetics and cosmetology schools), because they can’t be sure if there are metallic properties in the henna that they purchase–and it can react VERY badly on hair that’s already been dyed).

If you want to purchase henna, buy it from someone on this list: http://hennapage.com/henna/where/suppliers.html

Or you can purchase the Jamila brand (in Lahore), as long as you demand BRIDAL export quality mehndi (it’s VERY reputable).

I also sell it as well.

Remember, henna only comes in one color. The only difference is how you mix it. Don’t touch anything called “black henna, blond henna, etc” They’re not henna. And some of them can really hurt you.

Re: Henna Hair dye

You know MS, I just love the way Mehndi feels on my hair. Someone did for me a few years ago and since then Ive always wondered why my hair doesnt feel the same way after dye. Plus, it smells good! Like Eid! :)

I would like to get a nice rich brown color.

WR, how do you mix honey and olive oil into Henna? How much of it?

Re: Henna Hair dye

Oh and how much coffee powder?

Re: Henna Hair dye

You can mix olive oil into the mehndi so you can manipulate it easier. You just have to do it by eye and feel it (make sure you wear plastic gloves).

Re: Henna Hair dye

Lush do henna bars, they seem like a bit of a bother to use but my friend used the blue-black one with really good results.

Lush - Henna

Yeah.. those aren’t real henna.

Interesting idea though!

why do you say that? if you read the ingredients and description for each one it's all natural and tells you which henna + additional stuff they have used for each colour...

Re: Henna Hair dye

Okay, Im going to do mehndi in my hair tonight ladies...wish me luck!

Henna really dries-out u're hair but if u still like the "auburn" highlights, mix 2 tablespoons of yoghurt and egg and 2 tablespoons of olive oil into the henna mixture..

Henna only comes in one form and that's the red/coppery color all the rest are mixed with harmful chemicals and dyes and I strongly urge everyone to STAY AWAY from them!

yah... that's why i mentioned the Lush henna. it's 100% natural, it has essential oils in it for fragrance and shine and cocoa butter for moisture... yes it had dyes but stuff like coffee and indigo root.

what they say about the blue/black one:
'Pure Persian henna mixed with Indian indigo for blue-black tints. It is an ancient Indian tradition to mix red henna with powder from the dried, fermented indigo root, to give dark hair deep blue glints. Indigo is not cheap so there are some synthetic black hennas around but don`t touch them with a barge-pole, promise? Lush Caca Noir is red henna with indigo powder, with the clove oil scent and Irish moss seaweed for softness. Cover it with Clingfilm and keep it damp for a redder colour or let it air dry for a black/blue tint.'
Indigo Herb (Fera tinctoria) , Cocoa Butter (Theobroma cacao) , Red Henna (Lawsonia inermis) , Irish Moss Powder (Chondrus crispus) , Clove Bud Oil (Eugenia caryophyllus) , *Citral , *Eugenol , *Geraniol , *Citronellol , *Limonene , *Linalool , Perfume

i just don't understand why anyone would want to go to the effort of mixing stuff up themselves when someone else has already done it for you.
unless someone can tell me what's wrong with them, coz i can't see it!

Exactly. It has so many other things in it that are not henna, including things that people could be allergic to (such as the essential oils). You're hard pressed to find someone allergic to henna itself, but it's much easier to find someone allergic to perfumes or oils. And the preservatives in it that keep it, and keep that shape... I'd feel much more comfortable just mixing the mehndi myself.

I can't tell anyone else what to do, but I wouldn't use it, simply because my recipes work well enough for me, and I know exactly what goes into them (thus I can tweek them per the requirements I need).

Think of like this. Those bars are like store bought hair dye. Mixing henna yourself is like going to a high class salon where they will mix the colors by hand, per your specifications :)
Nothing wrong with either, I just prefer the latter.

fair point about the possible allergies but like anything, it would be wise to do patch test.
anyone can use store bought hair dye without a problem.. the whole reason you go to a salon is because they are doing something you can't, with products you can't buy. if you can achieve the same thing at home with ease that's all well and good but most people can't.

lol.. i don't henna my hair anyway so i don't really care. but if i wanted to achieve a dark brown or blueish colour i would go for these over mixing my own, unless i was very experienced and confident. purely because i would want to know for sure what the outcome will be rather than to risk turning orange/reddish.

Re: Henna Hair dye

i put the tea plus lemon infused mehndi in my hair always

Re: Henna Hair dye

When I mix henna for my hair, I just put warm water and olive oil into it. You don't need lemon because the dye bonds to the hair easier than it does to the skin, and thus needs less of a catalyst for release.

im thinking abt it aswell, i use henna like twice a year so i keep changing its recipes, these r the ones i found the best, before 2-3 yrs i had a craze of red hair so i used the tea recipe twice on my hair n got beautiful shade, but now im more fan of brunette brown so concidering it.

i like the way Nadia khan match her hair with her outfit, when she is wearing red/maroon her hair is red. when black/rust/gold her hair is brown with blonde strikes etc

i also like to bleach my hair in honey color by mixing Milk & honey n applying in hair for abt 4-5 hours (its sooo hard to apply milk in hair :( it all spilts....) but still i soak my hair in it & it gives me soft hair with light shine n color (it looks good on fair complxion girls)

i'm also thinking abt coloring shampoos....does anyone tried one? im thinking abt Pantene coloring shampoo...love its red n brunette shades!!

Re: Henna Hair dye

henna will dry out your hair. its best to go with a similar hair color of your choice with one of the good hair color brands.

Re: Henna Hair dye

My khala told me to soak tea bags in water until you get that reddish color and out it in the mhendi then apply to yout hair and you get a reddish tint. I tried it before wedding...doesn't work

After shaadi I just went to the parlour and died my hair a red/chestnut shade and it looks amazing. Mehendi would have never done that for me :-(
