Hello ladies, I was just wondering if any of you use henna to lighten your hair color? Like, I usually use regular hair dye..but lately..my moms been tellin me to lay off of that, because of the harsh chemicals..and cuz I’m so young. So..I wondering if I could substitute with henna. I’ve used henna before, but it never really gave my hair any color..I guess cuz my hair is really dark. But I see people in india..with like orange hair!!..how did they get that color..obviously..i don’t want it to be orange..but ya know..I want it to lighten up..like a light brown..I want it to show..I want to be able to see it!!! lol. so i was wondering which brand could be suggested..and if it actually produces any color for really dark hair.
Re: Henna for the Hair
Henna will give ur hair a reddish tint. If your hair are very dark the red will probably only be visible in sunlight. If you are looking for brown in your hair, henna is probably the last thing u want to use cos then the red won't easily go away and any brown over that will turn it orange!

There is only one way to find out if a woman is a real redhead. ![]()

Re: Henna for the Hair
well if anyone has any other advice..don't be shy..hehe.
Re: Henna for the Hair
my sister put henna in her hair...because she wanted a slight tint...but its really hard to see if you have jet black hair. so she's been putting it in her hair more often and you can actually see it more. but i've seen some girls that have a really nice color, but i don't know how they get it like that..sorry!
Re: Henna for the Hair
if you put henna in your hair you cant dye your hair for a VERY long time, it wont work!
Re: Henna for the Hair
Actually it does work Majestic. I know someone who got highlights thatturned out tooo yellow and the bright head put mehndi on it in an attempt to cover it up. You can imagine how orange it must have turned. So she ended up using dark brown over it which, even though not perfect, looked a lot better than the orange.
Re: Henna for the Hair
My mom has tried putting henna in her hair so many times and it just doesn't show up cause her hair is too dark. Like FF has mentioned, it'll only show up in the sun.
I've been using hair colour for years and my hair is fine so far.
Re: Henna for the Hair
yeah..i guess ill just stick to my ammonia free dye for now. i've always have issues with my hair..i think it may have started from using that dumb straightening iron.
Re: Henna for the Hair
Traditionally people start dyeing their hair with henna to cover white hair .. and if there's just a bit it isn't obvious, just a glint. But if there 's a lot of white hair underneath then you will end up having a lot of orange when you dye with henna.
Re: Henna for the Hair
hmm..i don't have any white hair at the moment...so i guess my hair would totally go in the direction of no color at all..unless im out in the sun.
Re: Henna for the Hair
Talk to your hair stylist before you use henna as traditionally henna was used for its cooling effect on the head thus its use in mega hot countries like the arabias, subcontinent and the africas.
Henna has some minerals that when applied repeatedly causes the hair to get fragile and thus break. You may have noticed that it also relaxes the hair follicle causing it to look straight after a couple of uses. This is also why you cant use dye as the pours of the hair have been filled by the henna constituents and thus the other dye cannot be absorbed.
Re: Henna for the Hair
I've never heard that repeated use of henna can cause hair to get fragile........because its renowned for its excellent conditioning properties.
Re: Henna for the Hair
Henna as a conditioner is used with the presence of egg, oil or yougurt. And all three of those impact the dye in the henna so it does not tint your hair as much. I was told this by my hair stylist - may be she just wanted me to get my hair dyed be her? hmmmm
