Thank you so much for answering Paheli! I am initially going to try to get the peels done professionaly. I am too scared to try it on myself mainly because i haven’t done my research yet. I don’t know the procedure as to how it is done. Just have heard about it to help with the acne scars. Maybe i can get a couple of treatments done by a dermatologist until i feel comfortable with trying it on myself. I just wanted to know how many treatments it takes to see results since it is costly and i would give up after a few if it didnt show any improvements in the skin. It seems like you have gotten a lot and you plan on continuing long term does that mean that the results are non-lasting?
I don’t know much about microdermabrasion. But from my understanding, they blast fine crystals onto the skin and take off the top layer? Again…not 100% sure. But I do know microdermabrasion in non-invasive and doesn’t require much “healing” time b/c nothing is penetrating into the skin. This also will not work for deep scars or wrinkles.
Chemicals peels: You have several to choose from…Lactic, Glycolic, Salicylic, Mandelic, TCA. These are acids that literally burn off the top layer of the skin. These penetrate into the skin, generally require multiple treatments…and depending on how “deep” the peel is (based on % of the chemical/time left on) can require “downtime” to deal. (ie. face can be reddish, flaky etc. for several days; for deeper peels…the skin will “frost” which will eventually scab and fall off…these can take 1-2 weeks to heal; I had “frosting” happen to me once and it took about 1.5 weeks).
Lactic & Mandelic peels are the most gentle ones. TCA is the strongest and should be used with EXTREME caution. I did 40% Glycolic peels (5-6 if I remember right) about 2 years ago and it got rid of most of the hyperpigmentation I wanted to get rid of. I did try 30% Salicylic and found it to be too strong for my skin.
Recently I decided I want to get back to doing peels to smooth out my skin more. I did a 40% Lactic Acid peel last Saturday…my face is still “recovering” from it. I will most likely do this once every 2-3 weeks until I’m “happy”. Then maybe move to Glycolic or continue with this. Haven’t decided yet. Maybe 2-3 years from now, I will look into starting TCA. My “issues” aren’t bad enough to justify TCA right now in my opinion.

I can not stress enough that you NEED to do your resesarch before doing any chemical peels on yourself. Without proper education…you can easily burn yourself and cause bad scarring. Almost all the “horror” stories I’ve read about these peels…its been b/c people didn’t do their research. They either left the peel on for too long, used too strong of a peel, didn’t do patch test before, didn’t use sunscreen afterwards diligently etc. So PLEASE do research, understand the risks associated with this before doing it.
All chemicals peels make your skin extra sensitive to the sun (just like retinol & AHA products). Wearing sunscreen ANY time you’re outside the house is a MUST. Otherwise, the risks of you developing hyperpigmentation increases.
