I just got the green card so am planning a visit to pakistan in a month to meet my in laws and have a reception and valima. I have a ton of heavy dresses but i don’t have casual/semi formals. I am always on top of trends to the extent that i’ve bought samples used at fashion shows directly after a show from certain lahori designers. but i live and work in boston now and it doesn’t make sense for me to be spending $300-$400 on a desi designer outfit which I’ll only wear once.
so to cut a long story short, i don’t want to buy sania maskatiya even though looking at her outfits pains me with longing and desire and urgggh. instead i want to create trendy desiwear by buying outfits from here so i can wear them in boston afterwards.
(btw below is a sania maskatiya dress that makes me want to cry…, but i shall not look at it)
For example this BCBG dress might work with tights (white?purple?black): BCBGMAXAZRIA - YOLANDA DRESS
please please please send me other suggestions as i don’t have much time and i want to look like the awesome trendy person that i am and not a sloppy amreeka return wearing outfits from 3 seasons back.
Re: HELPP!! first trip to pakistan after wedding.. meeting most of the in laws
^ I'll only be in pakistan for 2 weeks so won't have time to buy outfits from there. I don't want to splurge money on desi outfits since i won't wear them in boston. have way too many desi outfits that I've only worn once :(. That's why I was thinking of buying dresses so i could use them as kameez in pakistan and wear as dresses afterwards.... just a thought.
Re: HELPP!! first trip to pakistan after wedding.. meeting most of the in laws
The bcbg dress has a very trendy silhuette and wont look like a “dress”. I can actually picture it on sania maskatiya’s rack with purple churidar. Here’s another one but i think this is too short: MANGO - CLOTHING - Dresses - Single pleat two-tone dress
Re: HELPP!! first trip to pakistan after wedding.. meeting most of the in laws
I am thinking this might work with a chunky necklace and choridaar:BCBGMAXAZRIA - VIEW ALL SALE: RUNWAY IVEY COLOR-BLOCKED DRESS
I’ll spend $200 on one or two dresses but rest i would like to keep within $40. couldn’t find anything at zara or mango. any ideas?

Check Ann Taylor loft, express, the limited, New York and company, h&m. Even gap and old navy for dresses and long tops. You can buy nice western cut tops and shirts from places like outfitters, crossroads, breakout, leisure club in Pakistan at relatively reasonable prices that you can re wear over jeans and pants in Boston.
Also check out tops by ego and sheep, they have online buying and cod facility, you can order from abroad and get them delivered in Pakistan where you'd be staying
i would recommend a quick trip to your local khaadi store to pick up ready to wear casuals too

You are going to pak, I would suggest that you buy ur cloths that u want to wear over there from there .. as from experience I can tell u that things from here look off there … u will not feel comfortable and most probably u will feel not in with them, believe me. Fashion from here looks good here and fashion from there looks good there unless its a desi gathering.
Anyhow there are ready made boutique that have western influence desi wear, u can go shopping as soon as u get there.

Why not sell your outfits if you aren't going to wear them again. The outfits that are in style are super trendy and will look really bad once the fashion is over. Thank god it has been the same style with khameez get longer to maxi length. I have updated clothes by pairing with churidar or tights to use the clothes longer. Some outfits I added very wide lace to make longer.
Truthfully, most of clothes won't be worn to reap the full value Bc I've wanted one of every style. I will probably donate them if someone takes them to Pakistan. But honestly if you have a sister, friend or someone else who is your size it really makes sense to share or just sell the clothes. It is good for your wallet and the environment.

I would send the designs and funds to prototype and ask her to have these ready for you by the time that you arrive in Lahore......or even have them delivered to your home prior to your arrival.
The money that you would spend on one of these dresses would buy you at least three from Pakistan.
Plus you can have them in any colour, fabric, style and print (provided you have them block-printed).
Re: HELPP!! first trip to pakistan after wedding.. meeting most of the in laws
I like your idea but you may want to try a couple of dresses with tights and dupattas may be to see if they will look nice.
I liked the first dress but the next one I think is too short and I did not like the third link.

completely agree with you there. I have recently started getting anxious about all the desi outfits in my wardrobe. I had enough to begin with and when i got married i got a ton more. ... ACTUALLY there is a tradition where a recently married girl gives all her old clothes to female relatives right???? i could do the same. take them all with me and have my mom distribute to my cousins. wah kia idea!

thanks for all the wonderful suggestions ladies! i think I’ll wear a pair of coridaars/tights and head out to these stores so i can try on dresses on top and see how it looks. btw i got printed pants similar to the ones khadija shah is wearing here: Style Stripped - Pakistan’s Premier Fashion and Style Portal.: trend alert
I could pair them with a longish shirt and that could work too!
Re: HELPP!! first trip to pakistan after wedding.. meeting most of the in laws
who is prototype? someone on Gs?
yes.....there are a number of designers on GS.....you can send a private message directly to her and you can find details regarding her work in the Bazaar section.
