Literature based on observations & real life experiences, rather than fantasies or theories. Like autobiographies and work based on real life incidents.

Also includes studies based on formal research methods such as surveys, experiments, interviews, focus groups etc. - the main idea being that the subjects of investigation are involved in the process of conducting the study.
