Help with planning the "bridal" outfit

Very recently engaged, planning shaadi for 2012. Despite reading this forum for quite a while, for some reason I feel lost now that its finally time for me to plan my own shaadi! To make a long story short, when it comes to my “look”, I literally am on my own. I don’t have any females in real life who can help.

I’m not able to travel to Pakistan/India for shaadi shopping. And no, relatives back home can not help(rather, I don’t trust them b/c I know their taste!). So I’m limited to the U.S. I live in a Southern state but can travel anywhere in the U.S. My state has a large desi population but the few stores I’ve visited locally…I wasn’t impressed with their bridal collection.

I know many of you here had your mom, MIL, or other relatives pick out your outfits. But for those of you who actually planned yours…how did you go about it?

Questions:

  1. How far before the shaadi does the outfit need to be ordered? I need 2 outfits. Maybe a 3rd one.

  2. How do I go about finding a place (or person) who will work with me in customizing a outfit at a reasonable price? I don’t want to spend $$$$$ on a designer outfit. I’m ok with replicas as long as the fit and quality is impeccable.

  3. Are there any well known stores in the U.S. for desi bridals that I should visit?

  4. Has anyone here gotten their bridal from someone overseas? If so then I’d love to hear your experience (PM me if you’d prefer to remain private). I’m open to this idea but it also makes me nervous. This being my bridals…I’m screwed if something goes wrong b/c I won’t be able to get mistakes “fixed” here.

Any tips/information would be greatly appreciated.

aww I wish u so much luck sweety, unfortunately i dont know about stuff in the states. dont u have friends who are visiting pakistan whom u can trust with this?

Re: Help with planning the "bridal" outfit

Unfortunately no.....of the few desi female friends I have...none of them are going back home anytime soon. And they all have been married for a few years so even for their own wedding, the shopping was done several years ago.

Thank you for your well wishes! :)

Hey Paheli00

I believe that Rani Emaans have a store in the US (check facebook or their website for details) or email them on [email protected]

Many Pakistani/Indian designers have outlets in the US. There is also the Indian designers Shyamal and Bhumika (check facebook again)

If you just trawl their websites, you will definately find that they have stores in the US.

I think you should start looking/finalising what design/colour clothes you want now since you have 2 maybe 2 outfits. It normally takes 8 weeks to complete an outfit but you need to room for errors etc!

All the best x
