I want to buy a laptop which will be of personal use as well as for collage. please suggest me which laptop to buy - I want one which has loads of memory as well as can be light so that i can carry it easily to my collage (since i have to travel for 2 hours and change buses and subways).

How much is your budget?
Very light laptops generally tend to be more expensive, since they have more expensive (lighter) parts in them.
Most college students generally are on a tight budget (unless you have your daddy’s credit card) and will go with a mainstream 14" or 15" laptop, which won’t be very light, but will do everything they want and will be very reasonably priced. If you are not particular about getting brand-new, then go with refurbished. If you buy from a reputed vendor, they’d be factory refurbished, will have warranty and can save you several hundred bucks.
A good brand-name Intel Core 2 Duo latop, with 15" screen, 3 GB RAM, loads of’ hard disk and DVD writer etc can be had for about $500-$600. Check www.buy.com

Lol, i have my own money but if i need more then my daddy's credit card will help me a little bit but not much...i am not sure about the budget i want to see all the laptops first and then decide how much to pay...but i am totally clueless about laptops :(

What would you on this laptop aside from word processing? Budget?
I’d suggest you go with Intel Core 2 Duo with at least 3 GB of RAM. You can probably get one for US$600-700. But it won’t be light weight.
By the way, don’t go with AMD processors (even though they may appear cheaper) as comparatively speaking they get very hot and have poor battery life.
If lightweight is so important for you, then I’d suggest Dell Latitude D430. I am using a D420 for 2 years now, is very light and portable and has not crashed even once (well, thats more a software function than hardware, of course). Properly configured, can cost about US$2,100.

Well, daddy's credit card is not a bad thing actually. I had one too, so to speak (we didn't had credit cards in those days, but you get the idea). No big deal. All it means is one less problem to worry about. :)

It can be a hardware function too. Trust me, many things can go wrong because of the hardware, and as a designer I can say they're interlinked. For instance, this one time I occasionally started getting the infamous blue screen of death on a laptop. First I didnt care, just rebooted and carried on. After a while it happened a little more frequently (still rare), and I paid attention and the dump showed it was a device driver of the display. Now it might have looked like a software issue, but I researched it online, and it turns out the wise guy who designed the NVIDIA board on the laptop laid out the board in such a way that the bus caps were so close to the heatsink that one of them probably broke down with the heat. I just opened up the laptop (piece by piece all the way to the motherboard), desoldered and removed that bus cap, put a new nichecon replacement, and threw that damn korean one they had on there in the bin. No problems with that laptop ever since.
So based on the above, my recommendation for Teelo would be to be pay very close attention to the reviews (from users ofcourse) about any known issues in the laptop. Acers are great, but Ive heard that their customer service by far the worst. While gateways arent the best when it comes to packing and layout, the customer support is good. They even change hinges for free even if you break them yourself.
