Help with greasy hair

So I’ve basically had greasy hair my whole life. It had never bothered me before because I used to wash my hair everyday with generic drug store shampoos head and shoulders, pert plus, etc. However, for the past 2-3 years I learned that I shouldn’t have been washing my hair everyday because its not good for you so I tried to bring it down to every other day instead of every day. For the last 6 months or so I have started working out at the gym everyday and therefore because I sweat my hair gets disgustingly greasy really fast. It looks quite weird at work especially my side bangs which kind of get glued to the rest of my hair because of the oil. I don’t want to wash my hair everyday if its bad for it but I also don’t want to look like a grease monkey at work. Right now I’m using Avalons organic lemon clarifying shampoo once a week and then another shampoo called regenepure which is supposed to help with hair growth (which is also mostly natural ingredients and contains no parabens or sulphates).

PS, I really don’t do any other harmful things to my hair, i.e I don’t use any products, other than argan oil on my ends and I blow dry/straighten like once every 6 months.

Is there anything I can do to stop my hair from getting this greasy after I work out?

Re: Help with greasy hair

Maybe try a natural or organic dry shampoo in between washes?

Re: Help with greasy hair

Where did you get Avalon shampoo from? I really wanted to get it as well.

I have oily hair as well so I have bought Avedas pure abundance volumizing powder and a dry shampoo whenever my hair gets greasy.

Re: Help with greasy hair

use Sunlight Dishwashing Detergent [Lemon]...its known to cut the grease well :D

Re: Help with greasy hair

I have really greasy hair as well. But what you see after working out is actually sweat, grime and grease mixed together, and that needs to be washed out of your hair right after you work out. And try using a Tea Tree Oil shampoo....it can be bought at a health store or at the body shop. Even though its called "Oil" its actually really good for greasy hair and skin.

Re: Help with greasy hair

Put yoghurt on your hair 20 mins before you wash it

Re: Help with greasy hair

@ teelobhain: I got the Avalon shampoo from the real Canadian superstore. I think you should be able to get it from anywhere really I have seen it at Wallace, shoppers, etc.

@ saima: wow that sounds disgusting, pretty nasty if I'm not washing it then. Where's the grime coming from though ? I have a lemon clarifying shampoo which is supposed to help with grease but I'll try the tea tree oil one too. I've heard the Aubrey organics one is good. So does that mean I should be shampooing my hair everyday since I'm working out every day? It won't dry out or harm my hair?

@ MkD : how does the yoghurt help?

Thanks for the advice guys!

Re: Help with greasy hair

real Canadian superstore? Is this superstore located in Mississauga as well? I don't think that the Avalon shampoo is available at shoppers drugmart...Mississauga mein pata nahi kahan milta hai yeh shampoo...

Re: Help with greasy hair

wow ... i CANNOT not wash my hair after i've worked out ... i see some girls who just quickly shower without washing their hair .. and i'm like .. EW!

i dont shampoo my hair everyday ... but after working out .. i take a really warm shower and rinse my hair really well. no shampoo. working on my scalp with my finger tips. without putting them in tangles. if i really have to shampoo on a no-shampoo day .. i just take baby shampoo .. rub it between my hands and work it (gently and quickly) all over my scalp and then wash it through letting the soapiness run along the lengths. no conditioner. just 2-3 of drops of almond or olive oil through my hair.

Re: Help with greasy hair

sorry for going off topic... just wondering is there walmart in Canada?

Re: Help with greasy hair

Try using a T3 Refresh or BLOW dry shampoo in between washes. The T3 comes in 3 shades and wonderfully refreshes and volumizes roots, you need just a quick spray and 2 and hen comb the area. It smells like you have just washed your hair!

Re: Help with greasy hair

Yes..

Re: Help with greasy hair

@ teelobhain: real canadian superstore is like a presidents choice brand so I'm thinking Loblaws and Zehrs might have it, No Frills is their lower cost brand so I doubt they'd have it.

@ farrah: yeh I know its kind of gross but I've tried washing with just water and it doesn't seem to make a difference, its really funny, coz my hair dries yet it still looks greasy. It seems like shampoo is essential to get that grease out of my hair and thats why I didn't want to shampoo everyday, but looks like its my only option if I'm going to work out everyday. I don't use conditioner anyways since I started using argan oil all i have to do is put a few drops on after a shower and my hair becomes silky smooth.

@Elusive chick: I did try tresemme's dry shampoo one time and all it did was make my hair gummy and white, it looked ridiculous. Is this T3 brand any better?

@Sidra: I have heard good things about shikikai but isn't it also very messy?

Re: Help with greasy hair

^ Wash your hair with baby shampoo its much better.

Presidents choice/ loblaws doesn't have it...nor does shoppers drug mart:(

Re: Help with greasy hair

Lee Stafford - Dry Shampoo. I swear by it!

Re: Help with greasy hair

do you massage through your scalp when rinsing (going from the hair line to the back of the head)? and is the water warm enough to cut through the grease? i mean .. if you're doing this everyday AND shampooing twice a week, it shouldn't really be a problem. Do you come back home and then shower, or do you shower in the gym? If you're coming home, then you can ofcourse use shikaki .. in the gym ... you could just use baby shampoo .. but you have to be quick with the shampooing so that you arent OVER-cleaning it.

Re: Help with greasy hair

You could try using dry shampoo on the days where its greasy and you dont work out? Dry shampoo is amazing!

or alternatively baby shampoo? it's mild enough for baby's hair so isnt really damaging for your own?

@ farrah: I tried the massage through my scalp thing and it seemed to help slightly but my bangs were not as nice as when I shampoo them. I try now not to use water which is too warm because I've read its not great for your hair, so I usually go for lukewarm water now. I usually shower right after the workout. I'm going to try and see how the dry shampoo works, but baby shampoo also has milder surfactants just like my organic shampoo so if nothing works I guess I'll just lightly shampoo the front part of my scalp.

@teelobhain: I just saw avalons shampoo at shoppers drug mart and wal mart when I went this weekend, so its weird you can't find it where you are. Maybe it runs out? try another store a little further away from your house probably. Also try looking in the organic area, they might not be with the regular shampoos, in wal mart they keep them in their beauty section, not with the rest of the shampoos.
