Okay, i have a cable internet provided by Cox communication. I download lots of movies from torrent sites. Few days back i downloaded ‘the grudge’ along with other movies and after one day my internet got disconnected.
i called the help center they told me i downloaded the ‘grudge’ and it is against copyright act so they disconnected me. that guy even told me in which directory i had the movie. he asked me to delete it first and when i deleted it he turned on my internet.
He told me that some monetering agencies scan all the shared drives of people and when they find any “illegal” stuff then they report it to the ISP.
First thing i want to know how can i hide my ip from those people? some one suggested that i should use router so they cant scan me.
The second problem is even more weired. that guy told me not to have movies in share folders so i “unshared” my d drive. now even i cannot access that drive. i have lots of useful data plus movies and da other stuff in that drive and i need it back.
Every time i click on drive d(partition of my hdd) it says ‘Access Denied’. it doesnt even show the drive info(size, free, available etc) in my computer. When i tried to share the drive again, the sharing and security property of that drive dont let me click on it. it says you are not authorised. it says only admin can change the settings. Now i am the only user(admin) on my computer (apart from guest, sqlserver and .net) why my comp is not letting me change the settings?
Please help me getting my files back.
Just a thought, have you got some sort of NAT or External firewall running. From what I understand you have to have a static IP cable connections which your isp issues to you and without that particular ip you are unable to authenticate on your ISP server.
Peh gayya naa rappherd - :D You are lucky they didnt send police to charge you with copy right violation.
Get a router - connect through it & only open those incoming ports that are extremely needed to be openned, use a linux machine if possible since usually those crawlers get into machine over net-bios. I am only giving you this information that its not that happened because u downloaded something it is happening to the innocents who are just reading newspapers on the web since there are malicious crawler scanning machines all over the world so better to save urself.
Rent the movie next time to watch it rather than downloading - copy it to ur computer if u want to watch it again than downloading.
Happened to me twice, my connection wasn't disabled but Paramount studios came after me for downloading and redistributing copyright material. I was surprised as to how much they knew about my activity on the net right up to the MAC address of my ethernet and cable modem.... SCARY....
P.S. Firewall is not the solution nor is spoofing, they can still track you down plus your ISP can disclose your information it is the law.
