help.. switching infant to formula

I have a 3 week old baby girl and I wanted to give her formula once a day. She hasn’t been putting on weight and many of my friends are telling me to try formula once a day. I have been trying for the past 2 days but she wont take it. The first time she would keep on spitting it out but I kept persistent and kept on wiping and feeding more. Eventually a few mins later she just threw up.. Then the next time I tried again and she just kept on spitting it all out.. like she totally refused to take in one drop.. sigh

What can I do to help this? I have been using the Avent bottle with the newborn sized 1 nipple. For the formula I tried with Enfamil.. slightly warmed (say 5-8 secs in the microwave). Should I try giving this to her at room temp instead? I also hav a can of Good start so that’s the next thing I can try. I also hav this newborn sized gerber bottle/nipple.. I could also try that. Possibly too many variables in this situation but just wanted to know what other moms did with an infant this size..

Re: help.. switching infant to formula

Some kids hate to switch from breast milk to formula milk. But you just have to be consistent. I used to give my little one Similac with DHA/ARA at night, warm water, 2 ounces, then add one scoop of formula, mix up and it should be fine. I used Avent as well initially then switched to the Playtex with disposable liners.

Give a little, then a little more...eventually she'll take it.

By the way, have you asked the doc why she isn't putting on weight? You may not need to give her formula, maybe just increase length of feeds?

Re: help.. switching infant to formula

dont micro heat the milk... and maybe try switching the formula helped me when my son wasnt drinking the good start brand but liked similac

Re: help.. switching infant to formula

bhenjee, please forgive me if i am being nosey, but has your doctor asked you to supplement with formula? My daughter also doesnt like formula, she spits it right out ( i have tried both similac and enfamil) and i realise that there are enough battles to be fought and this is not going to be it. Seriously, taking care of little ones is hard enough and if you dont need to giver her formula and stress over her not taking it, then why do it?

I am still breastfeeding her and pumping and giving in a bottle when we need to so i dont have to mess with formula. I wanted her to have a bottle at night since i had heard formula fed babies can sleep through the night but she didnt want it and i gave up.

But if you really think it will make a difference in her weight, then go ahead and try try try, like Niksik said, eventually she will develop a taste for it.

PS: Congratulations on your baby. What did you g uys name her?

Re: help.. switching infant to formula

hmmm try to give her at night when she's a sleep and gets up for feed.

Re: help.. switching infant to formula

Well thanks for all the feedback guys. To answer all your questions, well she's just an active baby at night and instead she sleeps peacefully during the day. I'm sure all babies are like that in the beginning. Once she get up at night for a feed/change.. I just have to put her to sleep from scratch b/c she gets all wide awake. So I was thinking that perhaps formula will also help with that.

I tried Goodstart on her.. she liked it and drank it but it gave her severe constipation and she was miserable all night so obv I'm never giving her that again. I will try Enfamil one more time.. like nikky said maybe she will eventually like it. Or else I'll ask my ped to get me samples of similac.

and Ira, I agree with you. This is all pretty overwhelming as is, I don't want to stress myself out with finding the right formula for her. I guess I will just hav to drop the formula idea for now. And thanks for your wishes, we named her Rumaysa :)
