Help: Studying a painting with kids

How would you study a painting with a 1st or 2nd grader?

Say a painting by a famous painter by Dali or Van Gogh…how should you explain a painting and then what sort of questions should be asked to your child? Lets say we have this painting to study next:

Ghost of Vermeer Delft which can be used as a table.

Btw, I’ve never studied art so have no idea.

May be it should moved to RKS...I'm not sure.

Re: Help: Studying a painting with kids

You talk about the colours, what they can see, if they like it, why they think his leg is a table, the painting technique.

It really depends what your objective is, do you want them to produce a painting in the same style? Learn about an artist or just give opinions on the art.

I have taught Mondrian, Van Gogh, Monet and kandinsky in detail with 5 and 6 year olds and we always start by a little bit about the artist, what the children think about the painting and can they produce their own version of it, use different materials to produce various versions of the same peice of art work. e.g clay tiles, poster paint, and collages of Mondrian's paintings.

I personally feel abstract art like Kandisky is much more appealing to younger children, or someone like Jackson Pollock. There isn't a right or wrong, you dont have to be able to 'draw' or 'paint' to replicate Kandinsky or Pollock.

Re: Help: Studying a painting with kids

  1. First talk about the painter.
  2. The era
  3. The medium
  4. The thought process/message
  5. Comparison between similar paintings or painters using the same style
  6. Ask your kid what she likes or doesn't like, what would she change, what colors would she substitute if at all..
