Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

Some of you have read the story of my left ear…for those who haven’t, here’s a recap: In July, while on a flight, my ears got blocked due to air pressure but the sinus infection I was having further aggravated my condition to the extent that my ears remained blocked even days after, and after visiting my doc, then an ENT specialist, I was told that my left ear had serious middle ear issues. I received 3 rounds of antibiotics and a steroidal nasal spray…well my left ear never did get completely healed and my ENT says it will take more time.

So Friday, I leave on another trip by air, and once again I have a sinus infection…

I called my doc’s office yesterday and given my history, I was asked to take Sudafed round the clock starting last night as well as this prescription nasal spray I have with me. They think that should clear me up and prevent ear issues.

Any other advice dear friends?

hit someone on his head and he'll lose his memory.. hit him again and tada.. he got it back..

go on flight again and this time u'll be fully cured. Inshallah :)

Re: Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

I have been taking Claritin D for my sinus issues and nothing has helped me as much as this particular drug. According to my online research, lot of people can't bear the side affects that come with it. Try it and see if it works for you.

Re: Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

So instead of Sudafed, I should take Claritin? OTC?

Re: Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

Nik...the very best gift I could ever give to one in your shoes is a "neti-pot". Find it, try it, LOVE it!!!

Its a tiny little teapot shaped thing with a long skinny spout. You mix saline solution - wam water and salt - in the teapot and pour it into your nostrils, one at a time. Look straight down into the sink, tilt your head to the side, insert the neti-pot spout into the top nostril and pour...the water will flow out the opposite nostril. Repeat on the other side. Then blow your nose. Repeat if your sinuses arent yet completely cleared out.

I had the worst (I'm talking 3-month) sinus infection...2 rounds of antibiotics didnt do the trick but two days of neti-pot cured me.

Kinda gross to get used to...but SO well worth it.

Re: Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

MO3, does it feel uncomfortable :bummer:

Re: Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

hmmm...its uncomfortable cause it at first seems kinda gross know what I mean? But once its all done and over with, you start out with sinus headache and misery and 5 min later, you can breathe and all the yucks are washed down the drain...its well worth the small amount of grossness-time.

The first time I tried it, I was totally grossed out and kinda cursing my mom (she pushed it on me) but my sinuses were totally blocked and I was in misery. It was hard to get used to sticking the spout into my nose and letting the fluid drain out the other side but it actually felt kind of pleasant, like I was washing the infection out of there. And it actually did.

Re: Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

Hmmm, I guess I need one then. Thanks MO3, as usual!

Re: Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

awww! you sound like you are so very hesitant but at the same time want to get better!! I was in the very same boat! Try it, really, you will feel SO much better! And prayers too for you for being back to your reg-oo-lar self soon!

Not the regular claritin but Claritin D. Yeah it's OTC. They document your ID though when you buy it for whatever reason.

Ps: Do consult your doctor about taking it if you are concerned.

Re: Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

OK. Will try that!

Re: Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

...just fyi, your ID is documented becuz the drug dealers make meth out of cold meds. So they have started to keep track of people buying cold meds cause if you buy enough to cure the whole high-school class then you prob have a meth lab in your basement...lol, thats the explanation I got when I went to CVS the last time I had a bad cold.

Re: Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

aaaaaaah! Wow!

Re: Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

Im going to try that too MO3. Ive got a sinus infection again and I had just gotten over it about a week ago. Im finishing up my second round of Azithromycin and taking Tylenol Severe Cold and Sinus. This year has been horrible on my poor head...Ive been sneezing painfully and congested for well over a month!

Niksik, hope you feel better! :)

Re: Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

Thanks PS.

I am actually getting better already. I just want to be perfectly alright when flying!

Re: Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

I tried the Neti Pot today and it helped considerably. Does anyone know how many times we do it throughout the day? Its helping me breathe easier now where I couldnt breathe through my nose before.

Thanks MO3!!!

Re: Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

Cool! Glad you're feeling better! When I had the sinus infection, I used it 2 or 3 times a day. Then during winter I use it about twice a week...our heat is very drying and it helps much.

Here are the more details for neti-pot thingy:

Neti pot for sinus health

Re: Help!!! Sinus & Ear Issues

Niksik, you may have tried it already but, before you get on the plane, use Afrin. This is an OTC nasal spray that works like magic within a few minutes. It clears up any congestion, sinus, no matter how severe it is, for 12 hours. You will feel much better during your flight. During my flu days, Afrin is my best friend. The most miraculous medicine I have ever used.

Not recommended to be used for more than 3 days in a row. With regualr use, the rebound affect can be worse than when used initially. You can get hooked, so know when to stop.

My hubby uses this everyday.... It's the best thing ever for someone with allergies esp. seasonal, and sinus.

Spring time in USA is really really bad for people with allergies. Ever since we saw the Neti pot - on Oprah - it's a blessing for him!!!
