In the ML Logistic Models in Sampson and Laub, the unstandardized coefficients (b’s) are the logs of the odds ratios predicting the likelihood of some outcome such as arrest or crime. If we transform the b to its exponent, we determine the multiplicative effect of the coefficient on the outcome. Suppose that the exponent (“exp(b)”) was 1.69 and it referred to the effect if family size on the probability of arrest. How would you interpret 1.69? “Controlling for all other variables in the equation…”
There are different types of regression equations depending on the distribution of the dependent variable. Imagine a distribution of the values of an outcome (such as the number of beers consumed after an exam). Most people have none, the next largest group of people has one beer, a smaller number have two, an even smaller have three and so on it goes (i.e. a smaller and smaller group has more and more).
