help re:home insurance claim

Salam people

Just wondering if anybody has any experience with home insurance claims because of fire. I really haven’t had the opportunity to do my homework and I was hoping that someone here could help. Even if somebody could point me to some resources it would be greatly appreciated.

So far, we’ve met our claims rep and he gave us the nitty gritty of the upcoming events. He was telling us that we could either take cash for the value of the house or ask them to get it repaired which they will regardless of the cost. So, does anybody have any opinions on this regarding what we technicalities should be looking out for? What sort of questions we should be asking the contractor which the insurance company is going to use? Is it a good idea at all to use their contractor at all?

Just some more useful info: Our company is State Farm. So far their service has been quite excellent. I’m in Toronto for those who don’t know though I doubt things in Canada should be much different from the States. Our agent also told us that the house will be reconstructed from the basement up.

All input is greatly appreciated! If you need any further info, please ask away.

come on people. I would really appreciate some input here. especially from people who've unfortunately had to face this situation.

I'm concerned about the inventory list that they are making. I mean our TV is not recognizable anymore, so it is impossible to tell what size it was, what company it was form. How would the insurance company detemine the product in such a case? Our agent was a bit wishy wahy here. Anyone have any idea 'cuz of past experience or general knowledge?

thanks

people in the bazaar section try to help where they can. seems like no one knows an answer for your question. hang on, someone is bound to know.

sambrialian.

I really have no idea. Your best bet will be to continue searching on the net for any guidance on this topic. Google it. :)

Thank you Faisal bhai for the reply. I'm looking around on the net.

Also, I wanted to thank the person who sent me some very useful info via PM. Much appreciated.

I dont know about house insurance but when I took Renters Insurance for my apartment I had to guess the amount for inventory in case of any fire or theft.. the amount is usually entered by the owner or renter .. insurance companies are not concerned about detatils of TV's.. just a guess of the value.. the more value u put the premium would be more.. so its up to u to put the amount u would ask if God forbid something happens..
