over the weekend, i happen to meet this hijaabi checkout girl at one of the grocery stores in Toronto. her name was Soraya. i asked her the meaning of her name but she didn’t know. her parents are from Turkey.
i don’t even know how to spell this word. does it start with the letter “SE, SEEN or SUAAD”. i also have NO idea which language this word is borrowed from. is it Arabic, Faarsii, Urdu, Turkish etc?
i don’t think it is the misspelled word SORAIYYA though.
Pronunciation of same word are different in Arabic, Turkish, Farsi & Urdu but roots are same.
Soraiya in Arabic means constellation...sitaaroN ke jhurmuT ko kahte haiN...ab agar saoraya aur soraiya same word haiN, as you suggested, to iskaa root word kia hai? thanx for help though.
oh...'SE' [as in samar = phal] se nahiiN ho saktaa?
Turkish language don't have Arabic/Persian alphabets, how you concluded it's Se for Samar ?
I don't know detail or root word but i have Turkish colleague whose daughter name is also what in Urdu we pronounce as Soraiya/Surraiya in Turkish he was Pronouncing like Saraaiya and in farsi they pronounce it as Surriyeh
.
If Its not Sorayya then may be Its Saraya as seen se
Its an arabic word which means secrets/secrecy (in plural) or secret missions
As in Islam, this word is used for the battles or secret missions/expeditions that were ordered by the Holy Prophet Muhammad :saw2: and not led by himself

The origin of the name "Soraya" is Persian/Dari and means "princess." The Dari spelling is ثريا
Also, the name Soraya itself is not originally Arabic. It is the Persian variant of the Arabic name Thurayya, (spelled ثريّة ثريّا in Arabic) which means "the Pleiades." Thurayya, which is the original Arabic form, doesn't mean “constellation” but rather refers to a specific constellation, the Pleaides, which are a group of seven stars which are part of the larger “Taurus” constellation.
