Istikhara is done when we want to take a decision and we are not sure about taking any decision that either one should take the step or not. If the person is unsable to decide it, he should leave it to ALLAH. And go for Istikhara.
The procedure is like this:-
There is a Dua, read the dua after Isha prayer may be within Nimaz. Then when you sleep, if you see anything good in your dream, it means yes otherwise no. Good usually is like you see something white colored and bad thing is you see something orange or yellow colored.
so after the Istikhara is taken and we act on it and our actions as a result of that decision hurt anyone or border on a sin.. do you think the defense "God told me to do it" would fly?
May Allah make it easy for you. The important thing in Istikhaara is to do it regularly and several times. Some people think that it should only be done once, this is incorrect.

simple ...do it until u feel that one of the path is right one.......it can happen in one day or may take as long as one week.........
we can do istikhara in our normal daily routine before doing any work.....the procedure is simple as given in hadiths...........say "ALLLHUMA AHDA NE WA SADAD NE" before doing something ....ALLAh will inshallah guide u to the better choice
