I graduated in 2006 with a bachelors in computer information systems. Due to some consequences, I was never able to work. Now I am planning to work but I am so confused as to where should I begin. I forget alot of what I learned in the university. Should I look for an entry level job in my field and hope that I will learn every thing as I go ? Or should I go back to university? Please advise.

For marketing/sales, you need to have apptitude for that but even if you have that, changing your field doesn't sound like a good idea. May be do a refresher's course or something that will revise plus add value to your degree.
If you can share further details, some specific suggestions can be made.

Your biggest enemy is fear. Only way to get rid of it is by action. Send resumes, make cold calls, walk into nearby firms, look for any job or internshio remotely connected to your field.
Don't worry abt having forgotten stuff. No one remembers everything they learn. Get a job temp or permanent. Stuff will happen. You will remember what you learnt. Slowly.
Read read read old subjects while you look for a job. In short, get off your seat. NOW.
Re: help please
^ absolutely agree with Southie... sage advice.
rather than thinking about this stuff too much, just start doing something. It may be easier to build your confidence through any sort of work placement for now... even if it's temporary or unrelated to your field. At the same time, you can pursue a couple of certifications that will make your portfolio a little richer than just having an undergrad degree and make you a little more competitive than a fresh graduate coming out of school.
Also, if you're good with programming or technical writing, there are plenty of jobs available through online sites such as Guru.com eLance.com - while you may not get a high paying contract initially, you can try to get a couple of contracts at a low quote and deliver a high quality on-time work product to ensure client satisfaction. This can go a long way in getting better contracts in the future.
So plenty of things you can do - starting today... overcome your trepidation & take action now! Best of Luck!
Re: help please
I am in the US in the midwest. I didn't work because I didn't have employment authorization which I just got now. I can't relocate because I am living with my parents and relocating isn't an option for me. Unfortunately, I haven't found a single job related to my field. There was an internship for which I applied, but they refused because they are only looking for students currently enrolled in university. I applied for administrative assistant job but since I dont have any experience I didn't get it. :( Can you guys suggest what I should do now? What kind of jobs should I look for? And yeah I dont have the money to start graduate school at this time.
Re: help please
Arent there any volunteer oppurtunities in US. I was in same situation some time ago i had to stop working for an extended period of time but i kept doing certifications and loads of volunteer work, which helped me remain sane and confident.

Hi there. To be quite honest, 6+ years of an employment gap would need a solid contextual explanation. Without a doubt you'll have to begin from step 1 and work your way up. Don't be upset by that though or see it as discouraging. In a world today where people are serving coffees with not only an undergrad but sometimes even a master's degree, you will see quite a few overqualified folks starting from somewhere. Luckily, growth is usually performance-based and not seniority-based so you should have no problem moving around if not up in a reasonable time (considering your field and all).
Hope those consequences you mentioned above are resolved now :)

Yes I understand that's quite a big gap so I am trying to go for jobs that don't even ask for college degree such as administrative assistant. But unfortunately, since I have zero work experience I got denied even at an entry level position :( Any one have any other ideas ???
Re: help please
I have work experience but even I am not getting any administrative assistant job offers. The market is tough. A lot of people may deny it but you should be prepared to wait for 6 months at least. Also, go for job fairs and also ask people you know if they can recommend you somewhere. About volunteer opportunities, you can go online and check out hospitals in your area. They have volunteer opportunities and also IT departments.
Re: help please
Also check this site, there are some free courses offered but good universities, IT included.

Some people have inquired about your location; if you can provide a hint as to where you are, that will give me an insight into your options and resources.
If you're flexible then do a few things: have your resume optimized professionally and consult an employment agency. This will increase your chances of being contacted by professionals. Secondly, definitely go to a temp agency and indicate a few areas that you are willing to explore, i.e., receptionist, data entry, etc. Then revisit the employment agency or recruiters and have them help you optimize this résumé further.
Also if you're a part of Gen Y then please don't forget to be patient. There is much critique against us for not being patient enough and having a sense of entitlement, blah blah.
Oh and tell everyone and anyone that you know that you're looking for a job! Make a profile on LinkedInn and expand your network but please have someone review your résumé first.
