They are the temporary files created by excel while you are working on a new file (until you save it with a name), and they should be automatically deleted when you exit excel.
Try deleting .DS Store file on the desktop, reboot.If that doesn’t fix the problem, try fixing the permission for that drive using the “Disk Utility”
